This is something I've been wondering about since one of my hosts had a very unstable period.

Besides my live sites on shared hosting setups, I own a private webserver, but it's on a 1Mbit line, so it's only usefull for tests and as backup purposes. But would it be possible to have a sort of 'mirror' of a remote DNN instance on this private server to which visitors would be redirected in case of a main site break down?

I imagine some sort of
  • automated 12 or 24 hour incremental backups
  • custom error page, that will send one warning e-mail to me, and then start redirecting traffic to the fallback server
  • prevention from users editing stuff on the fallback server
Is this crazy talk, or would it actually be possible? Any thoughts?

Same here.. I've always wondered why there aren't hosts offering mirrored accounts. I'd definitely get one.

I don't know of any host that offers this but as far as setting it up on your own machine, the only issue in the event of an outage would be the DNS record. You would have to change the dns record for your site in order to redirect to your home machine. I think that there is software that will do this, similar to the software that will detect when your IP address changes (in the case your ISP is using DHCP on you) and correct it in your dns record. Otherwise, doing this would be a matter of automated backups and keeping your hot standby up and ready.
