A few questions about parent and child portals . . .

* How many parent portals can I create in a single installation of DNN (DNN 4.4.1 to be exact)?

* If I may create more than one parent portal, what are the advantages and disadvantages of building sites with parent portals (rather than child portals)?

* What are the rationales or considerations that go into in deciding what type of portal to use?

This is not idle wondering . . . I ask the questions because I have found that there are 3rd-party tools (modules, skin objects, etc.) out there that perform as expected (as the makers intended) in the parent portal but NOT in child portals. Some developers support their products and would provide fixes once they know of the issue, but some module authors don't . . . which make me consider building my sites in parent portals and that would be my quick fix for myself. But I don't know what are the pros and cons for building sites with parent portals versus child portals.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, thoughts, and insights!

Come on, fellow DNNers, no takers for my inquiry?!

How do most of you build your web sites, in parent portals or child portals?

Strange that I have not seen any writings (ie: books, articles, documentations, forum posts, blogs, etc.) about this topic.

Thanks again for your anticipated thoughts!

Sorry, no taker here. I build all my live sites as separate DNN installations currently.

But if memory serves me correctly, there is no limit in the actual number of either parent or child portals you can create.

Thanks for your response, Ed.

I would imagine that most people probably do what you do . . . if they are developers and consultants, then they certainly will have to do that as each of their clients have their own installations of DNN; and if they are building the web sites for themselves for practical purposes, then they would likely need only 1 site.

So when you build your sites on separate DNN installations, do you create the portals as Parent, or Child, or do you replace the default Parent portal that comes with each installation of DNN?

My practice so far has been creating child portals under the default parent portal that comes with the installation, and not touch the default parent portal at all.

Thanks again for your input!

Depend of your situation....

My ISP let me create two databases (for a fixed price), and unlimit domains (pointing to the same directory). This restriction let me create ONLY two separated DNN installations. The first DNN installation have five websites, and the second just one.... (because of the activity)

DNN let you create unlimited child/parent portals... So far I use only parent portals...

sorry the silly question,
1. Under what scenario it is requiered a 'child' portal,
2. What are the benefits of the Child portal ...(over the parent portal)?
3. What are the differents betwen parent a child portal?

Cheers,
