In my current project I have an inherent need to keep the business data separate from the DNN data.  From the bit of module development I have done, there doesn't appear to be any reason why I cannot do this.  I already have come up with two immediate requirements for this to be done:
  1. Have a user table on the other database to feed the user information from the DNN database for immediate use in queries
  2. Have a separate connection string added to connect to the proper database
I still plan on using features like module settings and so on, but the data being displayed and worked with will simply be in another database on the same server.

Has anyone had any experience with this?  Good or bad?  What are you thoughts on this?

I do a lot of this and there is no reason not to do it - really the only things you need to keep in mind is that you cant use the DNN 'method' of data access you really have to have your own provider or code  the routines yourself otherwise DNN works great to handle all the menu/user/role stuff that is so tedious for site s

I appreciate you replying.  My projects very often need to be worked out in what is commonly thought to be unusual ways.  I am hoping that there are not any horror stories coming from others.  :)

What you are asking is really not than unusual.  Through the years many people have asked and commented about this type of setup for different reasons, from wanting to keep the application data separate to having the need to access legacy databases.

See this article by Michael Washington on how to use the DAL+ to help you connect to the other database: http://www.adefwebserver.com/DotNetNukeHELP/DAL_and_DAL_Plus/Alternate_Database.htm
