Hello, As most of you know I am a DNN newbie(joomla refugee). I believe I made the right move. But, I find the biggest weakness so far is the "social community" aspect of DNN in comparisons to some "off the shelf" products (that usually crash) or what I have found in Joomla.

So far, I have found two products that run in DNN that I would deem as a "social" networking module system. I like them both equally and, even though their over all use is the same, they are very different.

My only concern is this. Most dating/social community sites have a more advanced search feature. The social community modules for DNN allow you to search 1-4 item(s) at one time. When an "average" dating program may have 10-40+ search options to filter with at one time.

Here's an example

Let's say this guy wants to find:

Single

Female

ages 25-35

slim

non smoker

and lives 30 miles away from his zipcode?

Since this question, I have done nothing but study all the combinations of modules that a "newbie" could use for this sort of thing and I wanted to ask you all your opinion on what would be the best solution.

Option1- I frame a good dating program into DNN and "call it a day"(ignore any sore of integration)

Option 2- The above, but use a registration module with special skills that will help the dating script and DNN communicate with each other, back and forth.

Option 3- If one of the other for mentioned DNN modules are open source. Modify them with a more advanced search feature.

Option 4- User a registration and user directory module to make a custom social website. Hire a programmer to complete a homepage and members display page. Maybe even use one of the two mentioned modules as the "homepage/profile" location to display the output from the user directory.

*** With all the above mentioned, which modules would you choose?***

I have a similar need for my wife's business. I choose to use Bi4ce's DNN module called ListX. It has a steep learning curve, but works great.

I have a database of Adult Family Homes(AFH) in a table. I can search it super fast (Ajax) for the 20 characteristics that I have stored for adult family homes in the state of Washington.  The other hard part was designing the database and how to query it. I chose to use a lot of check-boxes - AFHs either have an opening or don't, but numeric age ranges and other such items wouldn't have been any harder.

I can make it so that each AFH provider is associated with the AFHs he owns. If I want he can edit the items for that home that I choose to allow him to do.

Contact me offline if you want more info.

I read about list X and I really liked it's description. It seems like it does everything from registration, search and output. I would probably have to hire a programmer to do the base work. But, I do like the module. How long did it take you to get comfortable with ListX and what was your experience with DBs before you began?

It is difficult to say for several reasons. I was learning ListX while I was learning DNN.  One thing that ListX lacks is good examples of search.

It supports at leas two methods. A post-back (search button) - in this mode one has to pass variables from one ListX module (search criteria) to another ListX module (A data grid of matches) so that the SQL query can be done. When the user selects a single entry to look at the details the record id must be pasted to a third copy of ListX for viewing and possible editing the details of the record.  Ajax mode - where each time the user enters a value on the search form JavaScript causes updates the SQL query in the search module. However in this mode any post-back clears the search form.

I didn't understand some of these issues and lost a lot of time.  If you go with ListX I'd be glad to let you have the ListX setup that I used and talk to you about it.
