I have been studying DNN for hundreds of hours, literally, and have never been able to successfully install.  I troubleshoot one issue after another after another.  I have purchased the DNN 4 book from Wrox and never got past chapter 2 (although chapter 1 was inspiring, chapter 2 flushed that down the toilet).  I have tried to install each version on multiple servers and am left with one problem or another every time.  I am an experienced IT professional with years of experience as a developer, DBA, systems administrator, etc.  I have concluded that this issue isn't due to lack of experience on my part but lack of quality on yours.

Please spend some more time on the install scheme.  This is obviously important as it is needed to actually use DNN.  I am extremely upset that I have wasted so many hours wrestling with this product.  I had wanted to learn and experience a portal technology other than Sharepoint.  It appears that my time is better spent exclusively in the Sharepoint world.

Your installation model is horrible.  Go back to the drawing board if you ever want to be taken seriously.  I have no choice but to dissuade people from checking Dot Net Nuke out.  Thanks for nothing.

I am sorry about your experience.  But I have to say that although some new users may run into problems installing DNN, it actually works for thousands of people in a wide variety of configurations, and some of these users are not techies.  I usually explain to new users that DNN is actually quite complex, some users expect a never fail installation like when you put the MS-Office CD in.  But DNN has several critical prerequisites that maybe are not explained or emphasized enough in the documentation.  If you have the experience you say you have, you should have figured DNN out, a good understanding of ASP.Net, SQL Server, IIS, and Web applications in general are definitely a plus.

Now, would you like to give DNN another chance???  Maybe you should have posted your questions and issues before spending so much time hitting your head against the wall and getting so frustrated that now you don't want to look at it again, I'm willing to bet your problem is something simple that you have been overlooking (it happens to all of us at one time or another).

Again, if you are willing to give DNN another chance, we can help you, post your specific issues with as much detail as possible.  I'll guarantee you that we can help you get DNN working and that you will like the product once you play with it for a while.

Carlos

I too will disagree that the installation process doesn't work.  However, I will admit that due to the complexity of DNN there are multiple pieces that must all be configured and by default the DNN documentation does not explain everything that you need to do.  I have a tutorial on my site (http://www.mitchelsellers.com) on how to perform a clean install of DNN 4.4.1.  if you are interested in giving DNN one more chance I highly recommend that you try my tutorial, it explains the IIS settings, SQL Server settings, as well as the needed folder permissions.  I have had multiple users follow my instructions after runining into difficulty following the books and all have been able to get setup correctly!

Thanks for the response, Carlos.  Unfortunately, clients in the real world expect results, not riddles.  Your response certifies my point (“But DNN has several critical prerequisites that maybe are not explained or emphasized enough in the documentation.”). I have sat here with a $40 DNN book authored by the creators of DNN and followed their steps to the letter. Can you tell me, for example, where in any DNN installation documentation it explains that you must remove comment tags from the web.config file after modifying it?
I not only have the experience in the technology areas you mentioned, but I’m also experienced in documenting my work properly. Unfortunately, DNN has not. I’m sure DNN is a viable product but a lot of us will never know due to unnecessary installation woes (just Google ‘Dot Net Nuke installation issues’ to witness some of the woes experienced by many others). This was the point of my first statement.
I challenge you to do a fresh install using the steps outlined in the book ‘Professional DotNetNuke 4’ authored by Shaun Walker and crew. You will find the steps do not render a successful install. I have been able to complete the install to a point only to receive a “Home page not found” error upon clicking the login link. This was only after troubleshooting several issues during the installation to get it to that point.
I’m not expecting a “never fail” install like MS Office. I am expecting that, if this product is to ever be relevant to some of us, that the install process be better documented and TESTED. I understand there are geeks out there that enjoy the challenges of failed installs like this. Navigating unnecessary issues gives them a sense of worth. My sense of worth comes from providing workable solutions to my clients.
Although I have spent an unacceptable amount of time dealing with this already and although my colleagues poke fun at me that I’m wasting my time studying “freeware”, I will give this one more shot. However, you are now officially my sponsor. Any issues I run across and have spent a fair amount of time troubleshooting on my own will be taken up with you. Your new task in your DNN life is to field any relevant questions I have regarding the install process in order to convince me of the product’s validity. I will trust that you have the experience to handle this. I know I do so the issue must be DNN.

Mitchel, thanks for the advice.  I will attempt the install again using your instructions (although I am running Windows 2003 Server with IIS 6 and SQL Server Enterprise edition on a separate Windows 2003 Server).

I understand there are multiple pieces that must be configured and the documentation doesn't cover most of this.  This has been my sole point.  How can critical pieces that must be configured NOT be documented?  My comments have been confirmed by both you and the other respondent to my post. You may not be surprised that most CIO’s out there do not tolerate that critical steps necessary to the proper deployment of a product not be documented. This may be acceptable to small clients like colleges, non-profits or mom and pop shops, but the big boys don’t play well with unnecessary loose ends. Some may, but most don’t. These are the types of clients I serve. I want to come to their table with some other possible solution than Sharepoint, for example. I can’t do so with this sort of lack of attention to detail.

I’m trying to spread the DNN word here in St. Louis but need to get out of the gate first :-)

Kind regards,

Mark
