Charles,

After reading your blog entry on "Look Mom, no hands", I was able to get the ball rolling on module development using only server controls.

An issue I am having is that while I can clealry and easily get "View" controls to work using this technique, I have yet to be successful in getting "Edit" type ones to work.

Have you had any luck in this area?

My test case was adding an Edit item to the actions menu and setting the definition to my edit control. Problem seems to asrise that the EditUrl will be incorrect (I get a startIndex error when clicking the Edit action menu item) for a server control.

Another issue arose with resource files. Where you able to use resource files for any localization using just server controls?

I must admit that I only eveloped the simple "Hello World" reference module.

Although there was some support "in principle" in the Framework for this, there were quite a few places where minor changes were neccessary and the changes made to support this were quite late in the development cycle.  I will investigate the "Edit" case and get back to you.

With regard to Localization - there are two ways this can be acheived, although again I haven't actually tested this to make sure it works.

  1. Use the "SharedResources.resx" file support - Any module can use a Shared Resources file located in the modules App_LocalResources folder.  It is automatically searched if the key cannot be found in the specified Local Resource File
  2. Override OnInit and set the LocalResourceFile property to anything you want - the requirement for the file to have the same name as the source file is just a default setting IF the property itself is not set.
