Since the first version of DNN that I have used it was suggested to me by the developers of several modules I purchased the turn off Friendly URLs for better performance.

Just recently the event module took me for a hell of a ride, Friendly URL's not checked turned out to be the problem.

Am I going to experience a slower DNN instance because of it?

I am not using the modules that suggest turning friendly urls off.

Does anyone have any simple explanation of what friendly urls does and effects?

Personally I have not heard of ANY valid argument why you should turn off friendly URL;s.  That is unless you are using a third party Friendly URLs component.

I am using friendly URLs on my sites and have not had ANY problems with it at all.  I would guess there is some performance implications using friendly URL's but I have not seen any number on it.  I also know that the DotNetNuke.com website has it turned on and runs a large amount of traffic on 1 server (so I have heard) and well if it is working this well I don't necessarily believe there is true reasonings for turning it off.

If you turn off frienldy URLs you then have major SEO issues to worry about as well.

My page titles are all in Russian. In IE they are ok, but in FireFox they look like crap, so I had to turn friendly URLs off. That's the only reason. I guess I'm an aesthete.

Everything in life is a tradeoff.  ASP.NET has to be processed by the server and is slower than HTML.  Chocolate tastes good but makes you fatter.  Friendly URL's take longer to process than not using them.

The questions whether the tradeoff is worth it to you in this specific case.  The simplest way to find out is to test.  In most cases, the extremely minimal processing time won't be an issue.  Even if it were, there are likely other efficiency improvements you could make that would be a better use of resources.

All the above being said, Friendly URLs should not be a requirement by any module.  I would call that a bug.
