I originally posted an inquiry here about how the DotNetNuke.com web site was loading slowly for me.  This was a consistent pattern through various ISPs (home, work, friends houses, etc.), so I could not chalk it up to a proxy or firewall problem.  here is the link to the original post:

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/118/threadid/75953/scope/posts/Default.aspx

I only mention that now, because I am now having a similar issue with my own site.  It is currently running v 4.05.01 on an SQL 2005 DB.  I am now experiencing the same slow load times that I once experienced on DotNetNuke.com, only this time on my own site.

I did not notice this load time problem until about the same time that I began using DNN to host other subdomains.  It may simply be coincidence, but the load times went up drastically at about the same time.

Just in case this is a hosting issue, I placed a trouble ticket with my web host, but I am not entirely sure it has anything to do with the server.

Here is a rundown on the symptoms:

  • First page load takes up to 60 seconds
(my first, not the application first - I get plenty of hits to keep the application going)
  • Subsequent page requests usually take 2-6 seconds each (sometimes longer)
  • At about the 10th page request, the load time once again jumps to 20-60 seconds

In the host settings, I have left most of the settings at the default.  I once had the Compression using GZip, but I disabled it.  I noticed a slight increase in page load time initially, but not since.

Here are some of my Host Settings:

  • Proxy Settings - Empty
  • Moderate Caching
  • Authenticated Cacheability - ServerAndNoCache
  • Compression Setting - No Compression
  • Use Whitespace Filter - Checked
  • Site Log Storage - Database
  • Site Log Buffer - 1 item
  • Site Log History - 90 days
  • Users Online - disabled
  • Event Log Buffer - Unchecked

Has anyone else been experiencing similar issues?  Does anyone have any suggestions to get the page load times down?

To anyone reading my post, here is something of interest.  I am currently using WebHost4Life and there is currently another thread talking about them and their service issues:

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/118/threadid/130175/scope/posts/Default.aspx

It would be nice to know if this is truely a web host issue, DNN, or a combination of the two.  I guess I will (hopefully) find out when their support gets back to me.  :)

Yes, I was just reading your thread on a performance tip.  Thanks for the info!  :)

Also, I should let everyone know that about 5 minutes ago I already received a reply that was concise and solved my speed issue on my shared hosting account at WebHost4Life.  There is an exception, one of my subdomains wouldn't load.  However, it just now began to come up.

Ahem...

Well, they must be really looking into it now, because since my ticket and the "fix" all of my web sites with them are not responding.  :(
