Hi

I have one dnn website nearly finished and im thinking of a second site thats un-related to the first.  But i9 am a bit confused about the portal part of DNN.  Becuase i have altered some of the core fuctions of DNN, ie. the look of the login.ascx and profile.ascx i need to run both sites on separate sets of code and have them connected to the same database.

Can i do this? or do i have to run both websites from the same codebase?

I have at the present used the default database "Database.mdf" on the simplest install. If i can share the database over two sites will i need to move it in too SQL Server Express and then update both sites connection strings in there web configs.

Thanks

Well, since you have modified the central code base, you will need to make some modifications.

You can run two DotNetNuke installations off of the same databse but AFAIK you must be running within an actual SQL Server db.

You will need to specifiy different Object qualifiers for EACH installation to ensure that you keep the data separate, you must also make sure that the membership application name is different for each.  (By default it is DotNetNuke)

Thanks Micheal

Another reason why DNN documentaion should warn people that if they change the code of login, register controls etc they will have to use those changes in any other portals that are built.

I for insatnce totally customised every area of my DNN installation.  I have too problems now, one is that on every upgrade all my changes to the core controls get over written and scondly i have just found out from you that i have to use these customised controls in any other portal i build.

I really allways thought that one could build a website with dnn and then build another using a separte install-join them together and mange them for one of them.

Cheers

Yeah, the big thing about changing the core is that it affects all modules.

Personally if you ever need to modify login or other processes, I recommend using custom modules that way it only applies to one portal, (or others if you decide) and it also shouldn't break upon upgrade.  However, it does take more time to build.
