I've always used GoDaddy to purchase and manage my domains, but given the trouble I am having with DNN and GD root installs, I am going with a different hosting company; therefore, I was wondering if there is a lot of performance gains  by transferring the domain...or just a few milliseconds saved when not pointing the DNS elsewhere....

Also, would keeping the domains w/ GD have email implications?  I am not sure how that works...want to keep my email addresses @mydomain.com, but not sure how that works when they are registered with one host but hosted on another.  Most hosting companies have the free email, but not sure this is doable if they don't control the domain, or whatever you call it.  ;)

Just hosting your DNS & website with different companies will not affect performance. Performance depends on a number of other factors - ISP's bandwidth, server hardware, server load, etc. You can manage your DNS with Godaddy and host your website elsewhere, and optionally your email elsewhere. You'll just need to make the appropriate changes to your Domain's DNS record using the DNS Control Panel (GoDaddy's works great). GoDaddy should offer free email with a domain registration and/or allow you to forward it. Alternatively, most web hosting package include email. Either way, you can have email (@yourdomain.com).

Thanks.  I've played with the GD DNS management stuff when I was playing the parked game, but wasn't sure if it would really slow the site down, so thanks for the info on both accounts....wasn't sure I could get the email address with the domain being at one location and the host offering email at another...wasn't sure how that works.  :)

One more?

Does private registration through proxy hurt your search engine rankings?  I thought I have read this before, but not quite sure...got a bunch of real estate, but I am about to purchase another dozen domains this weekend (about all that's left on the enter Internet), so wanted to ask these questions before I shoot myself in the foot.  I have a bunch that were private, so would also convert those if it helps with SEO.

Thanks again, Rich.

I can't say with 100% certainty, but I would not think that your domain registration would in any way affect your search engine rankings. Private registration prevents lookups and therefore unwanted soliciations and SPAM. I don't see how it could affect SEO.

I am told, however, that the length of time of your registration will affect Google Page Rank. The longer the better...
