Hi,

Can you make nice living developing and selling modules?

Can you make a better living selling an all in one solution e.g. with the DNN web site as well?

Can you make a decent enough living just creating portals for customers and buying in modules you need?

I am thinking of developing commercial module and would like to know if it a viable business?

Regards

Mike

Of course it is but you will be up against some stiff competition such as ventrian systems.

You are gonna need to develope a module that can be customised to do practically anything

Competition is always a good thing.

Surely the level of customisation depends on what the module does.

I think the answer to all your questions is Yes.  But the path to a "decent living" is different depending on your specific business model.  DotNetNuke development is not any different than any other sotware business.  You can make good money selling products, services or solutions.  How much money you can make is dictated by your ability to find a real need in the market and then filling that need.  If you are developing pure modules, then your market is limted to people looking for DotNetNuke solutions.  If you build turn-key solutions then you can sell to a broader business community.  There are many great modules out there, but there is still plenty of room for more vendors.  DotNetNuke itself is a great example:  There are hundreds of content management systems and portal systems in existence.  Some commercial and some open source.  However, we were able to find a part of the market that was not being served and have built a platform and a community around filling that need.  So don't focus on the competition, focus on your customers.  It is your customers that will buy your product or service not your competition.

But i have found that people now want to purchase a module that can do anything.  Like Xmods etc
