Hi there,

This is Chen Qiang from Singapore; we are planning to have a CMS system to publish the web page content, and also requires some other modules like Photo Gallery, Event Calendar Management, Discussion forum, etc. we are planning to rely on the DNN, but the problem is that we need to host the DNN site in our company datacenter which only provide Oracle database, and we also need to support web farm environment, which means there are multiple frontend web servers connect to the Oracle database, but there isn’t a file server provided.

So my questions are:

  1. Does DNN support Oracle? (I have seen there are some DNN Oracle adapters available in the market, Are these Oracle adapters reliable? Can support most of the modules that we required like Photo Gallery, Event Calendar Management, and Discussion forum? )

  1. Can DNN support the web farm load balancing environment without file server? (I have run through the DNN DotNetNuke Web Farm Support.pdf document, seems there are only 2 load balancing mechanisms there DNN supported: central file server and file replication services, but the file replication services is not reliable based on our previous experience, is there any way that we can store all the dynamic uploaded files & images into Oracle Database Server instead of a central File Server?)

  1. How much will it cost for the customizations that I mentioned above?

I personally, and this is just my opinion, would do my best to use DNN on MS SQL 2k or MS SQL 2k5.

Here's my thoughts on other dataproviders. They are a great feature, and can be highly useful in cases like yours, but I view them as yet another thing you have to deal with when new versions of DNN come out. The provider must be upgraded to meet any new DNN functionality that is included in the upgrade. You'll also need to write, or purchase, dataproviders for all your custom modules. We write our modules (www.engagemodules.com) to use the dataprovider model, but we've yet to take any time to write any dataproviders other than those for SQL server, mainly because there has been no need to do so, not a single person/company has requested our modules to be compatible with anything other than SQL Server. If someone came to us and asked us to, we could easily create one, as I'm sure most other developers could as well, but the point I'd have to ask the customer is: Do you want to pay us to develop the custom dataprovider, which could be hundreds of hours, or would you rather just buy a license to SQL server?
