Ok, no flaming please...
First let me tell you what I want it for.
I am going to build a community site for my family, allow family members to have a section where they can keep a blog, upload pictures of there kids, holidays etc. This means I want people who are old/young non-IT literate to be able to move/add/delete modules on there section, say add a poll, or a rss feed easily without my help (iGoogle or live.com style).
I have been looking for a portal/CMS for a while now have have installed both DotNetNuke and Joomla.
After a few days of playing I am confused...
I love the simplicity of DotNetNuke, the way you can move the modules around. You just dump a txt area on the right, nope changed my mind, 2 clicks and its on the left. Add a blog? No problem two clicks it's there. Where as as far as I can make out with Joomia if you want a new txt area on the right you need to code a new template before dumping it in. Not easy, not quick, not nice.
But then again, if I want a counter under each article to see how many people have clicked on it, no problem there is an extension for it (all be it you need to build a new template), want people to be able to leave comments on each announcement, again just grab on of the 1000's of free extensions. And speaking of templates, there are 1000's of free once available for Joomla. Where as the vast majority of DotNetNuke templates are pay for.
Ok you can get modules for DotNetNuke, but no free one's. Or at least not anywhere as many as you do for Joomla!
Ok, I know there are a few other issues to consider such as hosting, one runs on windows one on Linux. But I am not worried about that, please don't tell me the benefit of one OS against the other. I am purely interested in the software.
So am I wrong, have I not delved deep enough into ether peace of software. What do I do? Do I go for DotNetNuke or Joomla?
Cheers in advance.
