My DNN installs all run on SQL Server Express 2005 and I use the Management Studio to manage the dbs. I purchased Universal List because it has an import capability and also allows for Add/ Edit/ Delete directly to SQL Server Express tables.

The only issue is that I have identifed a bug in Universal List and they are not going to have a fix tested and released in time to help me out with a customer test of a DNN application tomorrow.

Basically I need a method to import data into a SQL Server Express 2005 table. Management Studio does not have an  import feature and I have looked far and wide for an import tool. It seems that at one time MS put an import tool in a Service Pack but then removed it. I have chased that import tool to the ends of the earth but could not locate it.

Does anyone know of a way to import records from a spreadsheet in SQL Server Express 2005? I need to get about 15000 records into a table for a test. I can either buy another module if anyone knows of a rock solid one or use some other SQL Server Express 2005 import tool.

Thanks for any help you can provide in this urgent situation.

I just did this myself last week with a dataset about 1/10th the size of yours-
There is another tool apart from Management Studio, although somewhat obscure:

Try:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn\DTSWizard.exe

Referenced on MSDN forums.

You might need to d/l the latest versions...

Thanks for the reply. But this is exactly the issue. I don't have that folder in my install. If you read around the web, you will see so many people pointing to the DTS Wizard tool, and then a ton of people saying that they don't have it in their install. Then people who have it say, download the lates version / SP and you will get it. Then everyone who downloads it says, I downloaded the latest version / SP and it is still not there. Then you find some posts where people say that the DTSWizard was in the SP but Microsoft removed it.

I guess I could be wrong, but I have spent hours trying to get DTSWizard to show up on my SQL Server Express install and have yet to find it.

If you have the exact install and are sure that it includes DTSWizard, then I would be happy to try it. Even on the MSDN thread that you sent, which I had already found, you will see a lot of people saying that they cannot get DTSWizard to install from any MS update.

If I don't come up with a solution soon, I will have to start creating INSERT statements in excel to just run from a query window.

Cliff:

I understand your frustrations- I just went around and around this myself last week as previously noted. I did NOT have the wizard.

I downloaded and reinstalled everything: SQL server express (SP2), toolkits, whatevers. I don't know at which point, of which install, the folder and wizard showed up, but now I have it. I *think* it was in the SQL server SP2 install, but  I also spent a long time looking in the wrong folders...

Be sure you are looking for the exact path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn

Good Luck

Check the ..\90\tools\ directory for BCP.EXE ... this is the Bulk Copy Utility that has been part of SQL for many years .  The tools will allow you to import or export the contents of tables.  This is a command line tool and has many options ... see http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms178129.aspx

hope this helps .. /Paul
