This is cool, although from what I've read it won't be available till 1st Q 2008.

The Infragistics version of this is also very cool and it is avaiable now. The Infragistics CalcManager is very cool too - it's basically a fairly full featured spreadsheet control based on Excel. A module version of this would be very nice for DNN.  The problem with these controls and implementing them into DNN is that they are commercial controls and aren't redistributable without buying the license. Which would make the DNN module versions pretty expensive. Telerik at least sells their controls seperately whereas Infragistics you've got to buy the whole $1000 package.

I would, however, settle for a step by step tutorial (one that might be easy enough for non-programers to do) of how to turn one of these controls into a DNN module.  I would be willing to pay for such a tutorial.  It is probably too much to ask but maybe Mr. Washington could come to the rescue here - he seems to have few limitations in his abilities!

Greg points out the major reason why I believe these types of things do not get moved into dnn modules.

I personally would write a tutorial for instructions on how to integrate this to DNN, but personally it is VERY simple...basically just following their instructions and slapping it into an ascx for the module package rather than an aspx page.

I just don't have the time right now to write something like that.

Mitchel,

If we buy the control, woudl you create the module? It would be for our own use and not resale and we would pay you of course.

Another very hot product for DNN would be a step-by-step tutorial on how to use Iron Speed Developer as a code generator for building your own custom DNN application modules.

For those of you who don't know - Iron Speed Developer is a visual (no programming) application builder for asp.net.  This product can use both Telerik and Infragistics controls. While this product builds everything including the (asPx) pages, DNN users only need the user control parts - asCx.  ISD generates a complete project for VS2k5 (or the free Visual Web Deveoper) so someone who knew what they were doing SHOULD be able to easily pull out the ascx user controls in order to build a custom DNN module.

The DNN custom module documentation does a good job but it is the code behind files most people will have a problem with. ISD solves that problem I think. ISD also has a free version of their product.

A number of DNNer's are successfully using ISD applications within IFrame's and have been successful in passing user ID/password between the two for a semi-seemless solution (say that three times fast! )  But this solution has it's limitations - the ultimate would be ISD generated DNN modules!

One solution I have explored for using ISD with DNN is the Open-SmartModule from Xepient Solutions - but haven't been totally successful yet.
