I have a site (4.5.5-upgraded today) that is running extremely slow. My main symptom is that the site takes 15-30 seconds to load, on campus, and up to 2 minutes off campus. Below are the trouble shooting steps I ahve taken
1. Set up a new install on the same machine, using the same sql server. Empty site loads in less than a second (as to be expected)
2. Loaded the skin from the site onto the test site - less than a second to load
3. Enabled Windows Auth - Now up to about a full second to load (still not a problem)

I am going to assume that this safely eliminates the IIS and SQL servers as the culprit. So I moved on.

4. Search the forums and found mitchel sellers site. Ran through his tips (deleted 160k log files on the problem server) . The load time is still 15-30 seconds.

I have ruled out the content as the problem as the load time is equally slow when loading the admin or host settings.

The only thing that I can think of is that the site has a large number of security roles (23). Would that many roles cause this problem? Thanks for the input ahead of time.

I don't expect that this is caused by 23 security roles, more likely there are issues in your data - missing items, missing indexes etc. but I know how difficult this is to identify.

Did you make sure to truncate the transaction log og your database?

Thanks, that helped a little. The previous dba didnt bother to configure that, and the log file had grown to over a gb. Its now back down to 1 MB. The pages now load in about 10-15 seconds if you are on campus. Any ideas on where I might look to check on missing items.

no, sorry, not without hands on the system, there might be multiple reasons - in database configuration, IIS website or DotNetNuke settings.

I belive I fixed it. Here is what I did:

1. Set the SQL server on a maintenance schedule to backup the db, truncate the logs, and reindex the db

2. Set caching back to the defaults.

The site now loads in 1-2 seconds. Thanks for the tip about a missing index. Thats what did it for me.
