I'm triyng to move a dnn 4.5.5 site from one server to another one. The database in made in SQL 2005 Express, and on the new server I'm using the same sql.

When accesing the website. I'm getting the following error:

"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)".

I did two trials. I installed the database on a remote machine and also on the same machine where the website is hosted, but the same error came up.

Can you guys please give me a hand here?

Check connection string. In case of local SQL server specifying server adress as <machine_name>\<SQL_server_instance_name> instead of "local" might help.

Also make sure remote connections are allowed to the server located on a remote machine and it's firewall is configured correspondingly.

IF you are using SLQ authentication AND the server is configured properly AND connection string is correct AND the user specified in connection string has the necessary access rights to the database than it's very hard to guess what might have gone wrong. You'd better find someone knowlidgeble to try and figure this out "locally".

We made changes to web.config to override machine.config, and it worked. Blogs.MSDN link gives instructions.
