Hi all,

Let me start by saying I spent over a year and a half experimenting with PHP-based CMS's before trying DNN.  Woah!  The look and the power!  There's simply no comparison!  Thanks to everyone in the DNN community for making all this possible.

My goal is to build a family-only portal that provides family news, events, announcements such as births and obituaries, historical documents in PDF format, photo and video galleries.  I think this can be done with DNN 4, and I've played around with the repository module and it's various skins for organizing documents and articles.  This will work out beautifully!  BUT here's the kicker: I want my family members to be able to comment on individual pieces of content.  More specifically, I want them to be able to see a threaded list of comments at the bottom of each page, be able to add a new comment, or reply to an earlier one, etc.  From what I've seen of the Feedback module so far, I don't think I can do this in DNN natively.  Correct?

Also, regarding the photos and videos, it seems there is no Gallery module included in the current version of DNN (4.7).  And even if there was, I'm guessing the look and feel of the commenting function in the galleries would be slightly different compared to that of other content types (eg. simple Text/HTML pages).

My point is this...can I have a standard, site-wide commenting feature as in Drupal or other CMS's?  By site-wide, I mean the same comment look and feel for all types of content on my site.

Many thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Colin

Colin - I'm not familiar with Drupal etc, but there is no "site-wide" commenting feature in DNN. This would have to be taken care of by individual modules. For instance, the repository module that you mentioned does support comments and ratings.

Take a look at the marketplace or snowcoveredc.om for a gallery module that supports comments.

If you're looking for some commeting system site-wide with the same look and feel, you can use Engage: PUBLISH.

it's an article management system with content versioning and whole bunch of features more than what you need. However, it does meet the requirements that you're looking for.

You can add content, video, photo... then enable the comment system for your family. You can find out more detail here or click here to try the module yourself.

Hope this helps!

Astonishingly, for all that DNN can do, and does well- this one tiny little element is still missing.

You can, of course, build your own "comment engine" with apps like XMod... but how sad is that.

So... pre-Cambrian

Well, just as a lot of types of functionality, this one can be taken care of by using a custom module, configure it to fit your needs. In this case there are several module I can think of that could fit your needs, because having users post something on the site isn't all that special, is it?

But you're right, there doesn't seem to be a real sitewide commenting engine. Maybe someone thinks of this as a good idea for a new module?
