Hi All!

Question... generally speaking, if I purchased DotNetNuke skins from snowcovered.com, am I free to convert it to standard HTML and use in outside of DotNetNuke?  (keeping in mind that I will still honor the license to not share it, etc...)

I think it would be best if you contacted whomever created the skin as different authors may have different feelings about it.

good point and that is exactly what I have done... but i still wanted to get a general opinion about the subject anyway.

incidentally, what exactly makes DotNetNuke "DotNetNuke"?  since it is opensource and you are allowed to modify it till your heart's content... if I simply use the default.aspx file (with the license comment intact), wouldnt that (in theory) still be using DotNetNuke?  making the skin legally usable?

?

My personal opinion is that you could do what you want with the skin. Almost every skin I've ever purchased I've modified in one form or the other to tweak it to my needs. However you never know how a skin designer is going to react to "changes" to his creation. A few years ago there was a skinning competition where the winning skins were made available to everyone. One of the competitors proceeded to get very upset when people started using his entry for their commercial sites or modifying the images to suit their site's content. That's why I suggested contact the skin creator.

You already know the answer -- Honor the license.  If the license does not specifically allow use outside of DNN, it can be interpreted that such use is in violation of the license agreement.

But, for 99% of the skins out there it would be hard for a designer to collect on a "look and feel" violation, and HTML code isn't protected in itself, so the ramifications of use are pretty much related to the graphics in the skin.
