Hi, its my first post here. First of, thank you for this great resource extensive portal application. I'm hoping forward to use it after a few years with flash sites and other. Flash is good, just that .net is better in user interface and data management. My question is would it be possible to use DNN such that you edit the site on your local pc with local sql server then after finishing publish it to the web server like you do when you publish a frontpage site. I understand it might need to be done manually by copying the files on your pc to the webserver and maybe you need to copy the database also after you finish editing. but perhaps there is a module that will allow you to work with the site on say http://localhost/yoursite and then publish it through simple steps to www.abc.com with sql server on www.server.com etc

Thanks for reading,

Jad

Ack!  First of all, don't mention FrontPage.  :)

Secondly, there is not a module or 100% inclusive solution that I know of that will do what you want, but this is a common request.  If I remember correcly, there are plans to implement something like that sometime next year.

In the meantime, you will likely need to continue to manually transfer files from site to site.  As far as the database though, there are tools that will synchronize your database with another one.  One example is the tool offered by Red Gate Software.

If there is another tool that is available for DNN that performs this task, I hope someone will come up behind me and correct me.

You'll probably need to change your process for publication when moving to DNN.  Since DNN needs to be modified/designed/etc on a live site (at this time), the process you might use is to edit the page, but not make it visible until you are done editing.

Like Jeff says.. DNN is a dynamic website meant to be used live. You still run a dev site, but only for testing and development, not for publishing.

And if you like using Frontpage or Expression you can continue using it as a convenient way to manage the live file system, but only for applying your tested changes to the site. This is only for code such as the skin templates and other static files that you might otherwise have to manage via ftp, not for content created your content managers in DNN itself.
