OK, not strictly DNN but here goes...

I want to produce some how to guides for my portal. I want to record myself while performing the actions and then just show the video as a tutorial. I've done this in the past with screenshots and annotations, but I think real time video will be better.

Anyone got any tips for good software for this? Free is ideal, but I'll invest if I need to.

There are three products that come to mind:

1. Camtasia. This will record screens, keystrokes etc.... for the application that you wish to promote. The outputs of this program can be into ....

2. Microsoft Expression Encoder.  With this you can edit any video you have [either through Camtasia or else direct from a digital source] and play it back through Silverlight.

3. DNN Silverlight module to display the results....... Loads of source out there to do this.

Thanks Duncan, I missed your reply so I've only just seen it.

I ended up buying BB FlashBack:

http://www.bbsoftware.co.uk/BBFlashBack.aspx

It has all I need for screen capture and annotation. It's very easy to use and I have no complaints so far. It exports to SWF, AVI, MPEG and I believe FLV shortly.

This is a top class piece of work and will help you make tutorials for your software so your users don't have to read a huge manual.

I'll echo a recommendation for Camtasia, I've been using it and Snagit (screen capture, same company) for close to a decade now.  The latest versions are a breeze to use and multiple output types.  I'm playing with Expression/Silverlight now, but standard media and Windows Media Player have always worked well in the past.

The DNN Repository or any of the media gallery modules work well for displaying the content you record.
