Hello guys, i have read the DotNetNuke guidelines i would like to provide Custom DotNetNuke packages to specific country users.

My fellow people keep asking me that how to enable Turkish locale in DotNetNuke, they think it comes as default, however they need to download and install locale pack manually. This makes confussion to some users.

The question is, if it's allowed i would like to release a custom package for Turkish users, by inheriting all copyright and guidelines from orginal package.

Any ideas?

Ismet,

I am not 100% sure on the rules relating to something like this, but you might try sending an e-mail to marketing@dotnetnuke.com as I know the people that monitor that address are the ones that typcially make that kind of decision.

Ismet,

it is covered by the BSD licence to distribute code, e.g. as a customized package, but in order not to violate the trademark you need to avoid the name "DotNetNuke" for the package, you might add "based on DotNetNuke technology" only.

Over the last 5 years, this question has come up several times.  While the BSD license allows for redistribution, we ask that users instead download the package from DotNetNuke.com.  There are several factors that have driven our position:

1.  Over the last 5 years we have tried to monitor the growth of the platform and community.  By keeping downloads centralized, we have a better opportunity to see who is using DotNetNuke which allows us to better address the needs of the entire community.  One of the reasons we were able to justify a European OpenForce conference this year is because we had solid metrics which showed a large European user base.  Without these numbers, we well may have decided that the community was not large enough to justify the cost.

2.  As Sebastian pointed out, DotNetNuke is a registered trademark which was done so that we could protect the brand.  We want to make sure that if someone gets a product with the DotNetNuke name, that they are getting a product that is fully supported.  It is not possible for DotNetNuke Corp, or other community members to understand all of the variations that might be distributed through other channels and to understand how slight package variations may result in differing behaviors.  If someone downloaded the Turkish package, where would they report bugs?  Is the bug caused by your specific modifications or is it the result of the core package?  Our experience early on, when others distributed alternate packages under the DotNetNuke brand, is that it resulted in a lot of confusion for users.

My suggestion is that instead of creating a separate package, you should create and distribute detailed instructions that walked Turkish users through the installation/upgrade process.  These installation instructions would still allow DotNetNuke Corp. to monitor downloads and protect the DotNetNuke brand, while also simplifying installation for Turkish users.  I am sure that the localization team would be willing to work with you to create a template that could be used to provide localized instructions in many different languages.  Not only would you be benefiting the Turkish community, but you would also be assisting the broader international community as well.

While I agree with your points Joe, it would have been great for you to answer the exact question which was asked, because as a board member you would know exactly the right thing to say.

A simple yes or no would be helpful in clarifiying this very specific question -

Can I Provide Custom DotNetNuke Installation Package?   Yes or No  (please select one or the other)

"While the BSD license allows for redistribution" ... I am to assume this means YES

I would think it does, based on the fact that GoDaddy, maximum asp, powerDNN and other hosters provide one click installs - where is the difference? How do you  monitor them - I've never seen a comment on this forum that objects to the thousands and thousands downloads they provide.  How would it be if you talked like this to GoDaddy? Or emailed the control panel software companies and said don't provide this as a service - there really isn't much difference in the scheme of things. They are providing one click installs and plenty of them are outdated  - not the current flavours of dnn becuase the hosting company chooses not to offer it.

What about software that allows us to create our one click installs, such as Plesk, DNP, WHA.. just to name a few.. ????

With DotNetPanel with it's one click install which I have running, including several different flavours of the initial install - are you saying that I can't do this?

I can't see the difference here - it would be great to have some clarification... Ismet is not really allowed to but GoDaddy is? Surely the impact of these problems you are pointing out in your post would be signficantly larger with the likes of GoDaddy by comparison to Ismet community.

I think that what Ismet is offering to do is simply outstanding, this Turkish dilemma with localisation and support has been virtually single handedly managed, worked through problems, chipped away at the process and enchanced it by this single person.

Surely for once you could cut someone a little slack and acknowledge how much they have done and give a little blessing on their very generous offer.

You could have said - "Ismet - thanks for your generous offer to help foster a better DNN awareness in your country. We know that localisation has been really hard to handle and you've done a great job.    Go ahead and do this - our licensing allows that, but please let your community know about the risks of upgrading,  we'd prefer you send people to our site, but for the comparatively small number of downloads we'd be expecting, by comparison to the size of this project,  and the difficulty we've seen the Turkish locale be, we can see some benefits here."

See how much nicer that sounded?

Thanks for perservering Ismet and helping grow DNN in your country!
