Greetings,

I'm planning on launching a social networking type website in the near future and I would like to know if anyone has experience with the Forums module.  Specifically, what I want to do is segregate people by State and have separate Forums for State users.

For example, if you register and enter your State as being PA, you would automatically get the Pennsylvania home page.  What I would like is for all Pennsylvanians to then go directly to the PA Forum from the Forum link on that page.  I also don't want Pennsylvania users to be able to post in other State Forums, but they can browse.

What I don't know is how the database works in the background for the Forum.  Would this amount to 50 separate Forums with 50 separate SQL databases?  Or, would they all be part of a single Forum/Database?

The main reason I ask is that I'm also planning on using PowerDNN.com as my host.  I want to start with the Personal plan at $20/month, but it only allows 1 SQL 2005 database.  ( http://www.powerdnn.com/Services/DotNetNukeSharedHosting.aspx )  Would I be able to set up this kind of site with just one SQL database?

Create a role in DNN for each state. Consider using  an addon like Datasprings Dynamic Registration to assign the role upon registration, or simply let people choose it manually afterwards from either their Manage Services profile page, or from a role-assignment tool such as Seamless Opt-in. Get Active Forums if you want your site to work. Install it once, then create forum groups for each state. Set view and author permissions in the relevant forum groups to match the roles/states. Create your State homepages and use a redirect-by-role-on-login type of module to handle the redirection aspect (I forget which exact module does it but there are one or two on Snowcovered). Use the Active Forum forum viewer module to place the relevant forum group on each of the state pages.

That's just off the top of my head, not from experience doing the exact same thing, so you'll have to do some more research and testing beforehand.

oh, and one database is all you need to run it, however it seriously restricts your ability to carry out modifications and maintainence if you have not got the room and tools to create new or duplicate portals for testing. Try and plan ahead.. where is this site going to be in one year from now... and target that with your choices early on.

Hey - thanks for the info.  I will be upgrading the service as more people register to handle the load.  I really appreciate your suggestions.
