Does anyone happen to know where dnn4free went and if and when it will be back?  We have a bit of an emergency.  My son is working on a project (web site) for National History Day contest.  It's due on Monday and they don't have it saved anywhere. Although they have all of their information (text, pics, etc.) it is going to take a LOT of time to recreate everything.  They have put DOZENS of hours into this project and need to find a way to get it back.  Can anyone help?

I saw on other posts where you determined dnn4free is run by Tony Valenti.  I can tell you he exists, I have gotten the chance to work with him on a project of mine that he volunteered to help with.  he's a reputable, responsible, talented character.  I'm not sure what's up with dnn4free...but this could be a lesson for learning for you and your son.  When you invest a lot of time and energy in something....you may want to back it up...particularly if it's on a system that is offered for "free".  Take your medicine, I'm afraid.  If you are lucky, Tony will find some time and help you out.  But you shouldn't set yourself up like this.

Lesson learned for sure!  You get what you pay for I guess.    Tony did e-mail my son and said they were working on the servers and it should be back soon.  The site appears to be back up - but it was restored to a month-old version, so a lot of work .  They still have most of the content, but a lot of the formatting and editing has been lost.  In addition to restoring what was lost, they still have to convert it so it can be put on a CD for the contest - apparently not an easy task?  It's going to be a loooong weekend.  If nothing else, they'll may have something interesting to add to their interview with the judges!

This can help save a DNN site to CD but you probably won't be able to install modules on the site anyway:
http://www.snowcovered.com/snowcovered2/Default.aspx?tabid=242&PackageID=5841

You could possibly try httrack, but I've never tried it on a DNN site http://www.httrack.com/

The trouble with any copying depends on whether you have content sitting in modules that generate it on request. If it's all on individual pages in text modules then it should be fine.

The menu system is also going to cause trouble.

Good luck with all this.

It's true.  If you or anyone needs to squat for a period of time or use someplace as the source for a dnn backup, they can contact me use my test area and we can work out the rent-free details.  I hate to see homework get eaten by the dogs, and I would like to encourage you and your son for using DNN for schoolwork.

@ $5 mo/testing my test does what it needs to for me and I have a right to complain ($5/mo worth) if it happens to go away.  Lately I have not had much free time for testing.  www.moosespace.net/dad It might be better or a back up to the dnn4free deal (or as good).  Not that I want to compete with Tony or anyone else for host provider services...I don't envy them and the tasks they are responsible for.  Cheers.  Just keep fighting the good fight.
