Can anyone summarize what URL Rewriting modules are available and what their advantages/disadvantages are?

The ones I have noticed are:

My basic requirements/wishlist is:

  • I only want to rewrite specific pages, not every page. This is for a CATALook based e-commerce site, so for example I am going to take specific product pages and give them SEO friendly URLs like /armani-jeans.aspx
  • I don't need the module to search for links within the pages and rewrite them, although this would be nice
  • I would really like it if rewriting rules could be modified through a user interface (i.e. not just through a config file). The people who manage the site don't have access to the server.

Hey Laurence,

I'd suggest taking a look at Snapsis Pageblaster if you have not already.  This does provide a UI and URL rewriting capability. I can't say that i have much experience using the URL rewriting portion of the module, but you may find it is what you need!

take care,

Ian

Thanks Ian. I use PageBlaster a lot (it is great for improving page load time) but I got the impression that the rewriting functions weren't true URL rewriting. Maybe I should revisit ....

Any other suggestions (about PB or other modules) very welcome.

Laurence

I'm just about to release a totally new Friendly Url Provider / Url Rewriting module.  This is a ground-up rewrite of the existing one you already mentioned in your post.

I've made a post about it (with screenshots) on my blog at http://www.ifinity.com.au/Blog/Technical_Blog/EntryID/33/

To give you the run down, it's got the following features/benefits:

- You can assign any Url to any page within the site.  Pages can have more than one Url, if required.  Url's can also do 301 or 302 redirects if required.

- GUI interface for changing settings (host level access) and for creating and redirecting page Urls (admin level access)

- 'Standard' DNN module install process - no copying of files or modifying of the web.config

- Replaces the standard Friendly Url provider so it works completely within the DNN framework with the Core code, rather than doing 'on the fly' replacement of tokens in the Html.

This solution should solve all of your requirements.

Might look at ISAPIRewrite.  Rewrites at the ISAPI filter stage, before DNN ever gets ahold of the request.  Can rewrite for any content, not just ASP.NET.
