Hello,

I've read through many of the threads related to using MySQL with DotNetNuke.  I've spent a fair amount of time working with MySQL recently for a non-DNN related work engagement for a client.

I'm extremely impressed wity MySQL (version 5x) - and would like to hear from anyone out there who is using MySQL with DNN.  I'd basically like to know how you got it to work... For example, did you convert the core SP's to MySQL procedures?   Are you purchasing and conveting commercial 3'rd party modules to work with MySQL?

I see that there are some pretty impressive looking applications that claim to convert complete MSSQL Server databases to MySQL - including all the objects - and data...  Has anyone used any of these products - or were you able to use the MySQL Migration Toolkit?

Thanks in advance, Al

Al,

to use DNN with another Database server you need to adopt all install scripts and create custom data providers for the core framework and all module - due to the effort needed, there is (AFAIK) only one company providing an additional data provider (for Oracle), any other attempts have failed.

The conversion tools you mentioned will not be of great help, because they simply transfer databases from one server to another but do not adopt the code to access the database nor create adopted SQL scripts for generation or upgrade, which can be installed as a package.

Depending on the options of announced "Linq to Entities", this possibly might provide an option for DNN in the future, to become more DB agnostic and allow for an easy change, but this will require a lot of code modifications and investigations by the core team and weigthing pro and cons and I would not expect any solution within the next year.

Hi,

I fully understand that support for MySQL is not part of the DNN core - and won't be anytime soon - for all the reasons you mentioned.

What I'd like to determine is if anyone actually has a production DNN portal working with MySQL 5x.... and if there is - I'd be interested in how you were able to make this work.

Thanks in advance, Al

I don't think anyone is using MySQL with current DNN versions, at least nobody has announced a provider for the MySQL database.  I think the major driving force behind MySQL being used is now gone, most hosts are providing ASP.NET plans with SQL Server at no extra charge.  Cost was the only overwhelming reason to use MySQL, and version 5.0 of MySQL still doesn't provide any advantages over SQL Server.

Jeff,

I agree that for most hosting providers - cost is not the issue it used to be with using SQL Server.  I also agree that MySQL doesn't provide any advantages over SQL Server - but I have to say it is a very, very impressive Open Source application.  I didn't know much about MySQL (other than the fact that it existed)  until a few months ago when I had an opportunity to do a job for a company that has leveraged many of their apps with MySQL.

I just posed the question here because I wanted to see if anyone actually is using a current version of DNN with MySQL.  I guess we'll see if anyone steps forward...

Al
