Hello, all.

I work for a mid-sized web development company, and we do a lot of DNN work. I've mostly been learning how to work with DNN's module architecture by building modules for clients and learning as I go along.

However, we are now beginning to look at possibilities for getting at least some of our developers DNN Certified - is there any sort of certification process in place? I tried looking through Google and on the DNN site, and while I've seen a lot of mentions of it, I can't seem to find anything that actually tells me what I would need to do to get certified - or even if it's possible.

If someone could clear that up for me, it would be great.

Thanks,

Girasquid

Unfortunately there is no DNN certification currently. Since DNN is an open source project, we have not yet issued certification - I am not sure about the number of people willing to certify for it (anyone, please add your comments to this thread). Of course, to be able to do DNN development, ASP.Net knowledge (and certification) is of great benefit.

I think ASP.Net certification should be enough.

What would you do with the certification if you could get one specifically for DNN?

Maybe Engage gives out a certificate for attending their training classes.
As the official DotNetNuke training partner I would think they would be in the best position to certify you.

As a customer or potential employer I would look at a lot of other things to determine if you know your DNN.

I am actually just now going through the process of hiring another developer for our team here at my day job.  Honestly I agree with the above.  In some ways a certification program would be good, but in reality, the core items/development is ASP.NET so Microsoft Certifications go a long way.

I think that cost, management, integrity and many other things would be incredibly complex for DNN Corp to manage and honestly would be a barrier to starting something.  I know from talks that I had with Scott W. a while back that there was talk about this but this was almost a year ago that I last talked with him about it.

I also do NOT agree with a third party such as Engage being the one to start offering a certification program.  I believe for a certification program to have true integrity and any mert to it that it MUST be a DotNetNuke Corp thing and managed by the core team.......

Since I like keeping my certifications up to date (9 MS ones so far), I'd most likely participate if one was offered....

By its nature various Microsoft certifications can be a basis for DNN certification.

A certified DNN professional should be able to:

  • install, configure and optimize a dnn site
  • teach content managers how to use dnn
  • have a good knowledge about 3rd party components
  • develop modules
  • develop skins

Each of the above aspects of DNN can probably be specialism in itself.

What is the goal of certification? If I want to hire someone to do some ad hoc DNN job, I need a specialist. If I want to hire an employee, I probably want some broader skill set. I think one can learn all tricks of the trade, but it is my observation that people tend to develop some kind of preference for one or more of the above specialisms.

What else?
