Is there any work going on with the Banners module?  I notice that module doesn't have a forum topic or project status (that I can find).  Seems like an orphaned project.

Anyway, what I'm looking for is the ability to offer banner ad subscriptions.  For me, that means providing a means to allow vendors to pay online for advertising and register their add, upload banner, text, message, etc.  And then track when it expires and send vendor reminders to renew if they wish.  Maybe send stats as well.  On the backend, you would still want to manage the "approval" side of things to make sure the ads were decent.  But placing the burden of inputting and updating the content of the ads on the webmaster or site administrator just makes it really painful and almost not worth using (in my opinion).

It looks like the Banner module has most of the pieces, but I don't see anything that ties it all together the way I'm wanting to put things together.  Any ideas?  Any modules out there that you'd recommend?  I saw one on SnowCovered that seemed decent "Smoke Ranch Ad Banner Manager 4.5", but it doesn't look to have the ecommerce part down.  I may be able to do that separately if I can put together a subscription status to an advertisor's role that enables access to the module.  Thoughts, suggestions, ideas most welcome.  Maybe someone out there has already gone down this road and could share their solution.

Thanks in advance.

FYI banner/vendors issues gets passed to the core project in gemini. Project is not dead, but I agree some improvement is needed. There have been some small tweaks in DNN 5. I know the core team is focused on improvements in other areas (only so much you can do with the resources available), and maybe another version with sort this out at a later stage.

I'd be interested in what people say here about third party solutions as well.

Shawn,

I too have the same problem. I am frankly shocked that this isn't a major priority for the DNN team or that  there aren't some obvious thrid party solutions.

The ability to get income from a site through advertising is a major issue for certain site models. I started with DNN particularly because the banner module was there. Now that its on the scrap heap, so it seems, there is diminishing reasons for me to consider DNN as a platform.

Click Here for a thread I started asking for a flash solution so I could at least fake decent banners. No response yet.

Why would you assume it's on the "scrap heap" John? I would assume that improvements would be made on further releases. If you look here on DNN 5 roadmap http://support.dotnetnuke.com/project/RoadMap.aspx?PROJID=2

....there has been a lot going on. Of course, this being open source I'm sure the core would welcome any code improvements submitted should you wish things to be speeded up in this direction?

Personally I think this functionality is important, but you can't do everything at once. That's why third party modules fill the gap sometimes, that's why DNN is particularly flexible.

As far as flash and DNN is concerned, try searching google for: flash dnn module or even: flash dnn module banner ;).

Thanks

Alex

Mr Shirley,

I have no intention of getting into an argument but my previous comments stand as posted. I didnt assume but rather concluded it based on the evidence available.

You asked "I'd be interested in what people say here about third party solutions as well" so please don't jump on me for making honest comments.

The roadmap link you provided has no listing for a banner module as far as i can see.

It not being on that roadmap unless its buried, not being a major topic of discussion as far as i can tell, and sitting at version 1.00.00 as far as I can tell while all sorts of other modules get all sorts of major and trivial improvements I think qualifies it as NOT a "major priority for the DNN team" as I stated. I think thats a fair way of reasoning from evidence to a conclusion. If you have evidence to the contrary I'd be delighted to be wrong. I'd be estatic if i was wrong.

That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Your opinion can differ as is your right. So be it and I hold no grudge for it.

Regarding your third party comments, one might conclude (rather than assume) that some of us have searched for thrid party solutions and either found them lacking (as noted in the thread i linked to earlier in this thread). Also, the issue with third party solutions is that they usually require a cash outlay without really knowing if the module really fits the bill.

Again, this kind of module is a priority for me. It may not be for other people but it is for me. To each his own as people have differing needs. Like many people I am going to choose the path of least resistance. If a low cost thrid party module or a free core module fits the bill then I am going to choose that and move on.

I would very much like to set up my development enviroment and learn to author DNN modules. However, the architecture and learning curve make that impractical. That may work out for other people in their situations but not for me at the current time.

Although I appreciate that you are on the development team and that you and others do work to improve things. I appreciate that very much. DNN has been a great help to me and allowed me to reach a partial solution through reduced work. However, I do not appreciate feeling as if I am jumped on for making what I see as a simple and obvious comment.
