Mike - That depends on what you put in it. It is a lot of text data though, and generally DNN only stores text in the db. If you need more room, then use  a second database for applications that  need it. You just need to use modules that  allow a different connection string to DNN's. for data access -- Neil

Our company is currently in the process of doing a migration to mysql. We started with the provider created by the devart guys (http://www.devart.com/mysqlnet/dnn.html) and have upgraded that to 4.8.4. Currently it is working really well (dev environment only). We will also be updating to v5.0 when it comes out.

I wouldn't say it's hard to created the db and providers you need but it takes a lot of TIME!!! Something not everyone has. Our other advantage is that we don't use any 3rd party modules or many standard dnn modules. We only really use account login, text/html, contact us, localization and admin features. It serves as more of a development framework for us.

I would really like to see my company open source our efforts because it's something we will be updating semi regularly for ourselves and could really use all the help we get. How many people would activley help us develop this? If i can get enough backing i should be able to present my case reasonably well.

Hi Alex,

I think you are right. I am looking at it as a development framework as well rather than buying 3rd party modules.

How did you start creating a 3rd party provider?

Hi Mike,

Here are the steps we took.

1. We chose to use the devart MySQL.NET dataprovider to connect to mysql. You can download it from here http://devart.com/mysqlnet/download.html

2. The devart guys have created a DNN 4.7.0 DataProvider and put it up for free on snowcovered you can download it from here http://www.snowcovered.com/snowcovered2/Default.aspx?tabid=242&PackageID=9974

3. Follow the instruction from the package in step 2 and you will have a fresh instance running in no time!

4. To upgrade to DNN 4.8.4 you need to look at the folder /Providers/DataProviders/SqlDataProvider and go through each of the *.SqlDataProvider files and convert them to MySQL syntax. (Ideally you would write scripts to automate common tasks, but we currently do it manually)

5. A major thing to note is that this is for INSTALL only. There is no support for upgrade.

6. Good Luck :)
