We have a working live DNN site that needs to be backed up and reproduced for creating a test environment.  The site has many custom modules.  Our site is on a Windows 2003 webserver and the database part is on a separte 2005 SQL server.  We need someone who has done this before. Compensation negotiable.

This is something that's fairly straightforward to do. You don't mention whether you're going to use the webserver for your test environment or if you're going to use a local install on your Vista/XP computer but the process is pretty much the same.

  1. Backup your database
  2. Restore your database to the new database name. When restoring you'll want to select Options and change the restore .mdf and *log.ldf name.
  3. Go into the Portal Alias table of the restored database and change the portal alias so that it points to your test environment URL.
  4. If you have a special user or schema that you use on your production site you'll want to recreate that in your restored database.
  5. Copy your DNN directory to wherever you're planning on setting up your test environment.
  6. Open the web.config on your test environement and change the connection strings to point to the new database.
  7. Set up IIS to point to your test environment
  8. Launch the site by going to the test URL.

You should be pretty much good to go unless I missed something.

Alehret,

If you are looking for someone to assist you feel free to contact me.  I am VP of a software development and consulting firm and we have done several DNN implementations.  All of our sites are go through our normal environments moves which is often movement from dev to test and ultimately to production servers.

As mentioned in the previous reply post it is usually fairly straightforward for a technical user who is familar with backups and restores of databases and setting up IIS sites.  Every environment is different so things like setting up host headers on your server or virutal director settings are also a couple of items that might need to be done depending on how you are hosting it and where  you are hosting it.  The basic process is to get a complete copy of your IIS files up, a full backup of your database configure the web.config file for the new test environment settings and watch it go.

In practice I have found the most common issues you deal with is licensing issues with 3rd party controls.  Many controls have a single domain/server license and when you duplicate your environment to another server and url you can find your modules won't function without additional licenses.

Hopefully those are a few thoughts based our experience doing this often.  If you would like support in doing this feel free to contact me.

Good Luck,
