I have been building DNN sites for myself and for friends/family members for quite a while now. Recently, I have been getting more and more requests from people that are wanting me to build/maintain websites for them, or their busineses. The only thing I am not sure about is how to go about setting all of this up on my end. I have been using GoDaddy as my hosting solution, and it has seemed to be working well for myself, and everyone else. It's very easy to setup and have DNN running in no time, and space hasn't been an issue for anyone thus far. What I am wanting is your opinions on how to go about this. Should I be the one registering their domain names and hosting/email solutions, or should I have them do it (and just have me setup and maintain the sites).

I was thinking I could have them pay me a monthly fee, and I just pay GoDaddy each month. That way, I have access to everything I may need to work on their website. But what about those people who already have registered domain names? They may not want to "transfer" the domain name into my name so I can setup the hosting/email account and everything? I know some of you out there probably own a hosting company, or offer servies similar to what I'm trying to do. Can you please offer me some advice on what I shoud do?

Thank you in advance,

Randy, MCSE

Hi Randy,

I would recommend that you get them to order their own domain names and then let them know what IP address to point to. Otherwise you are going to have your hands full with maintaining domain names and doing billing when the time comes to renew.

I offer hosting for developers such as yourself that may be a better service than you can get from GoDaddy.
My developer's hosting package allows you to have FTP access to all your websites, and allows you to start with 5 unique IIS websites (seperate DNN installs, with their own DB).

This way you do the support for your customers on the first tier, and I handle the server maintenance, setting up DNS, POP3 e-mail, etc.

I have dedicated servers that are co-located in a data center, and there are only a few developers that share the servers.

If you are interested you can contact me through a private message at my website.  http://www.snapsis.com/Support/PrivateMessages.aspx

Might want to get a reseller account on a host, or at loeast one that pays referrals.  I personally register the domain and configure everything, but host on commercial servers, but that's mostly because my clients can't add songs to their iPod, let alone register a domain and configure DNS.  I don't care if they already have a registered name and even a paid host, as long as it meets requirements and I get the admin account/password.

If you want to start a hosting company, find investors and do it right.  Find people who know what they're doing in server and network management and pay them well. Find...  NO, better yet, don't do it.  There are enough crappy hosters already and if you're asking how to do it you aren't ready to do it right.
