I wouldn't wait. What better way to get to know 5.0 than to see the difference from your initial installation of 4.8? Also, it will give you some valuable experience going through the update process while the site is still relatively new. I think you will find that current versions are solid and if you are concerned with later stability I'd set up a back up test site to run future upgrades on before committing them to your primary site. According to the number of updates and fixes, we decides to rename 4.8.5 to 4.9.0, which shall be available within a few weeks (after extensive testing). Development on DNN 5 is continued, but though nearly all of the changes will not be visible on first glance, there are some significant parts reworked in the core. Luckily, most of the interfaces for module developers will remain the same, i.e. DNN 3 and DNN4 modules shall continue to run and there are few new things to learn. Module developers, please check out Charles' Blog for details.

DNN 4.8.x is a very solid starting base.   Sebastian has confirmed that an upgrade path will be available.  Don't wait, start now!
