We are attempting to have a skin built for our informational site. We are really trying to focus on SEO, because of the vast number of pages this site will create. Will a skin designed with 30 panes verses 5; give us any trouble in this area?

Thanks,

Sean

Hey Sean,

With the way that DotNetNuke operates, it will remove unused panes, however, I would recommend that after you get your skin designed that you really SEO the website as a whole.  At PowerDNN, we actually just finished completely redesigning our website from the ground up and we have done a large number of things to make it very SEO friendly - just google "DNN Hosting" or "DotNetNuke Hosting" to see.  If you're interested, we've also started offering very reasonably priced SEO consulting services to our customers as well.

By the way, one place that DotNetNuke is usually _very_ lacking in regards to SEO is the menu system.  If you look at PowerDNN.com, you'll notice that we've even gone so far as to build a custom menu sytem that makes things very seo friendly.

If you want to talk about SEO anything, please give me a call.  My cell # is 402-650-6072.

I am not an SEO expert but I work with individuals that are.  I would say that you have a few things that you really want to focus on to ensure that you have a DNN site that is optimized for the best viewing from an SEO perspective.

1.) Ensure that your skin is compliant and valid to the XHTML specifications.  Valid documents do tend to place higher in search engine rankings
2.) Ensure that you have page descriptions, keywords, and titles for all pages
3.) Use something like UrlMaster from Ifinity to change your URLs to a more human friendly format.  (I can't stress enough how much of a difference this makes!!)
4.) Work with a different menu component which will help you with the valid document requirement.

As I mentioned I'm not an expert on this, so I strongly recommend that you read Tom Kraak's SEO Quickstart Guide as he includes some of the above items as well as many other great tips.

As long as you don't attempt to actually use all these panes (drop modules into them), it won't make a difference to search engines as the code to construct panes only appears in pages when logged in as admin or host ... and SE don't log in :)-

However, for me it's more a question of usability as I find that anything above 6 or so panes makes life harder for admins as most of these panes are just in the way and slowing things down. I'm confident to say that 95% of page layouts can be achieved with 10 panes or less.

Also, do NOT wait and start thinking about SEO after your skin has been designed and implemented as suggested by Tony above. The skin itself is a crucial part of on-page SEO and therefore is a big part of your overall SEO strategy. Over and over again clients approach me for SEO help way too late (meaning the skin is all "done") and we have to spend time and resources to reengineer the skin to meet SEO best practices.

Oh, and again contrary to what Tony mentions above, there is no need for custom menu systems as 3rd parties such as Telerik and Snapsis, among others, have stepped up to provide very SEO friendly menu solutions.

Post here or check my blog for more DNN SEO tips and tricks.

Sean,

The problem with having 30 panes is that people who add content won't be able to easily determine how the page layout will ultimately display.

I tend to use the basic Top, Left, Content, Right, Bottom structure and use ZL-DNN Module Wrapper for any needed variations.
