I'm curious if anybody has experience setting up a Google Mini to work with DotNetNuke and specifically on an intranet.  We can't seem to get ours to crawl the content but I've seen people saying elsewhere (through Google searches) that they can get it to work with an ASP.NET application in general, and some sound like they've got it to work with DNN.

I'm at a complete loss why ours won't work -- we keep getting errors about authentication or a DNS error, etc.  We have it set up to crawl the FQDN (so http://servername.domain.ext) which is set as a portal alias on the portal (btw, the portal is normally accessed just http://servername or http://dnsalias, both of which are portal aliases; Google just requires a FQDN).  The authentication is set up on the mini with a domain user who has access to that server (aptly named "Google") and we can get it to crawl a virtual directory of documents just fine, but not the DNN app.

Anybody who has got a mini to work with DNN, on an intranet or otherwise, I'd love to hear what needs to be done.

As a side note, we've tried the search by Xepient but ran into problems with that one as well... so I'm guessing it has more to do with how we are set up (as a DNS alias instead of a real domain name), but I'd love to explore any avenues to get our search to work decent.

You need to set the Mini to crawl using a login account for DNN that has access to the content.  The Mini uses a domain account so you need to use a domain account in DNN.  That means using the AD provider for the account, or having an intranet that in DNN requires no permissions.  Also, you can't use a file crawl on ASP.NET pages.

FWIW, we've had a Mini for a couple years and it's been the most miserable search mechanism I've ever had to deal with.  The free Sharepoint Search is light years ahead of it in a Windows environment.  The Mini searched our Apache sites perfectly with almost no configuration, just another indicator of Google's engineers' mind set.

We do have it set up with an AD user both on the mini and the site and the file crawl is set on a virtual directory that has directory browsing enabled (that folder contains all the documents; pdf, doc, etc).

Are you using Sharepoint Search to search your DNN site, or did I read that wrong?  Frankly I don't care *what* we use at this point, just as long as we get something that can search better than the built-in DNN search mechanism.  If you have some alternative suggestions I'm all ears.

*EDIT*: The file crawl portion is working and has been for quite some time, just can't get it to do anything with our site itself.

Search Server Express will crawl a site pretty well, the free version is also affordable:

The problem with most is following certain types of links, a dropdown for example won't get dropped down to find links.  HTML links are perfect.  Also, the DNN menu doesn't make crawling easy.  A Sitemap will help.  For that matter, a Google sitemap and Google works great for a web site search, less so for intranet.

Fooberichu,

I am confused where you are haivng issues. We have used a Google Mini appliance to crawl a site without issues. We had to create a custom skin object and a custom page to display these results within our DNN portal. Is your problem the collectino of the data, the integrated search within your portal, or something else?
