well, after some confusion and missteps on my side and a borked DNN upgrade, I cut my losses and downloaded the 4.9 release of DNN as a full install.
By the way, installing it on Vista x64 / SQLExpress 2008 isn't really all that hard.
Nice default skin!!! So... why aren't the 'skins' in the included modules themed to compliment it?
Ya know, I'm not saying much here other than maybe strive for some interface consistency.

I can understand an upgrade not altering the currently installed skin selections,
...but c'mon... a default install and pre-packaged / supplied-by-dnn-themselves modules that don't look good with the main DNN framework install?

so try it yourself- install DNN 4.9.0 and add the forum module to a page. Before you do anything else, look at it.

I can't speak for the powers that be, but it was mentioned that the new default skin was what would be in DNN 5.  Most likely the module skinning isn't yet finished.  But your point is valid.

I'd be interested in how many use the default skins.  Why look like 60,000 identically skinned sites?

These are just my thoughts, but I would assume that the facelift for the skin was  done to try and break the mold a bit and get people to see that it isn't all boxy layouts and the other.  Additionally Jeff's point is very valid, not very many people use the default DNN skin, it just doesn't make sense.

Now if you have specific styling issues, where modules are not playing well with skins, those are great items to record in gemini (http://support.dotnetnuke.com)

The new skin is awesome! Not that I would use it on a live site, but it gives the new skinners an example to work off of. It's also nicer if doing a presentation to noobs on dnn. It' will leave a better impression than the old default skin.

Personaly I am really pleased to see the new skin as it is a good example of an xhtml compliant css skin.
I think the way things are now abstracted is going to be easier for many skinners.
This skin also demonstrates the new skin objects.
I think we should remember this release has has quite a lot fixes and some nice new touches so in some respects we are lucky to see this skin at all before v5.
