I am wondering if there are any details available about the features and functionality of the SN component of the 5.0 release? I have searched this site and only found mention and not details. We are working on building a SN site for a nonprofit client with 8000 members. I have researched third party module solutions (Smart Thinker, Active Profile) as well as the idea of using ning or other third party, non DNN solutions. Any specifics on the SN module for the upcoming release would be helpful to me in figuring out which way to go, as well as a knowing a timeframe on when it will be available.

thanks,

Will Sugg

Hi Will,

Having played with DotNetNuke 5.0 Beta 7, there aren't any social networking features in it.  I hate to burst your bubble, but 5.0 is basically 4.0 with a few extra features and a whole lot of bug fixes.  From an end-user's perspective, 5.0 isn't anything to write home about. :(  When I was at openforce connect, I was honestly expecting to see some really sweet social networking and workflow stuff but I think that's been canned from the 5.0 release (at least the one that is due out in a couple weeks).

Will, social networking enhancements will come in one of the later releases as part of the cambrian "wave", not 5.0. At this point I believe some parts are architected, and some parts have been prototyped but nothing is final at this point, and no release date has been set.

Tony, please stop with the misinformation, it causes confusion and is not appreciated - our plans for Cambrian have not changed, it is a series of releases, each building on earlier releases enhancements. You know this but yet persist in giving incorrect answers for some reason e.g http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/118/threadid/257047/scope/posts/Default.aspx being one of the latest unhelpful posts.

Tony, you were at openforce just like the rest of us, and if you'd been paying attention you would have seen that "Cambrian" is not one release, it is multiple planned releases.

The first release contains some major architecture enhancements to allow for added functionality coming in the next few cambrian releases. Other features that were talked about in those future cambrian releases include SN aspects, Versioning/Workflow, and many other items.

Nothing has been "canned" from this release, but I wouldn't expect you to post favorable things about the DNN project with what I've read from you over the past year.
