I have a potential client who is fed up with their hosting provider/webdesigner due to bad service and astronomical pricing. They have asked me if I can move their DNN based site to a less expensive environment.

I have never worked with DNN and would look forward to this, but am not sure how best to evaluate the feasability of just copying the entire folder to another host and firing it up. Concerns are about any customization that may have been made and what hooks might exist into other code. I know the webmaster has hooked in an sslswapper as the site has been setup to accept subscription payments through Verisign's PayFlowPro (no shopping cart though).

My client uses the site for content management. All pages seem to be accessed using DesktopDefault.aspx?tab=### (where ### is a number like 142). I this normal for DNN or is this some customization? My (potential) client can also change the content in certain sections  of the pages (almost like Contribute) by signing in and clicking on an edit button (pencil icon). Is this supported by DNN or is it perhaps some customization.

Any clues, suggestions and comments would be welcome!

Thanks much.

My recommendation is to at least start reading the DotNetNuke documentation, which you can download from this site (under Downloads).

A few pointers:
  • Maybe its a good idea to just download DNN and play around with it a bit on your local system
  • I don't know much about payment gateways, but i think they are ip based. Also for SSL you need an unique IP (unless you use a shared SSL solution). Unique IP address might be part of the cause of your expensive hosting right now
  • You mention "DesktopDefault.aspx?tab=### (where ### is a number like 142)", this means you are working with an old version of DNN, probably version 2.something. Mind you, this version is not asp.net 2.0 compatible, so make sure when you switch hosting that your site runs on asp.net 1.1
  • Copying a dnn install to another host involves these steps (for a default dnn install):
    • make sure the new (possibly temporary) hostname of the site is added to the portal aliases (before you start copying)
    • copy all files under the root to the new location
    • copy the sql database to the new database server. You can do this by doing a backup or sql DTS, or third party tools
    • change the sql connection string in the web.config of your new location
    • fire up your new site
On a side note: one of my services is to provide commercial support for any DNN related problem, such as moving a site to a different location. Feel free to contact me at support@apollo-software.nl for more information

Cheers,
