It has been over a year since the last bit of news on this.  Is there any to share or is this project "dead"?

no, this project has been dropped as there is a commercial MySQL dataprovider available at Snowcovered.com.

Is there an opportunity to get this provider project reopened?  

The provider listed at Snowcovered only works with DNN4.0.3 and sereneweb (the makers) have abandoned development (in fact they seem to have dropped off the internet).
