Hi all,

I've been working with DNN for about 12 months now and have built up a small client base while I learned the system. I've also developed a good working relationship with a local hosting provider. However I now have three client sites that are having consistant issues that I believe I've managed to identify as a resource allocation issue. Each site suffering from these issues is using third party modules that are not working correctly, I have been in contact with the module developers and am satisfied that in each case the module in question is well constructed and not the cause of the problem.

It seems I now have to find a new hosting provider that is able to provide me with the resources my sites need, so my question is twofold; Exactly what resources does DNN need to run effectively, specifically memory use? Can anyone provide some suggestions for a hosting provider that will provide the necassary resources for my DNN clients? Of course I will also need the usual reseller requirements ie. control panel, site stats, sub-accounts etc.

cheers

What kind of sites are you running? How much can you spend will help anyone to suggest you a goo hosting for your range. I ahve hosted with several hosting companies here are my picks:

I keep hearing good things about powerdnn. They are a but pricy.

If you get reseller deals usuall they all are crappy hosting. I hosted with IHOSTasp.net. What they offer for the price is good and they have reselller hosting. They have no support after 5pm and in the weekend. So if your site goes down on Friday afternoon you are screwed until monday. My site used go down quite frequently. I do not know if they improved their support and service in past few months.

Godaddy cheap but crappy. I used to have so much problem that finally I decided to take a dedicated server. I currently got my server from Server Intellect. They have excellent support all based in US. You can see my review at my website at DNN-Community. But my review is based on Dedecated server not shared hosting so keep that in mind.

You can also look at DiscountASP.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your feedback Tareq, duly noted.

Does anyone have any useful feedback on www.webhost4life.com?

I'm also keen to know if any one can give me the memory requirements for a standard install of DNN 4.x, only core modules installed

cheers

Martyn

 Hi Martyn,

There are a large number of factors that go into how much memory a site needs (users, usage, etc).  We plan for approximately 250MB of ram per site and it works out really well for us.  Some barebones sites use as little as 90mb while others are are up around 800-900mb.

The best way to find out how much memory your site needs is to simply get your site live and monitor its performance.

Marlyn,

From my perspective I would say away from WebHost4Life as there have been many very negative feedback posts about them here on the forums.

I personally have a few recommendations for hosting companies depending on the specific needs.

3Essentials for shared hosting (Referral link in signature).  They work well for smaller sites (less than 400-500 visitors per day), after that I start to see decreasing performance.

HostMySite.com for VPS hosting, if you want to get a virtual dedicated server to manage the  hosting yourself, but if you go this route, you must know how to do it.  This is where my business sites are right now, as I needed to be able to install software.

Mosso.com for reseller accounts, or multi site hosting.  (Use referral code REF-ICG to get $100 off your second month).  They are inline with base pricing for a VPS, but they manage the configurations, and memory/processor usage can scale to meet your clients ever changing site needs.  They can even bill your clients for you if you want to get taken out of the loop on that side.

If you have any questions about my recommendations, feel free to e-mail me at msellers@iowacomputergurus.com as I don't get notifications and often miss replies here on the forums.
