Peter - In the history of the last 100 years in America we have shown time and again that the biggest creation of wealth occurs when you remove impediments to doing business.  This means removing disincentives to business like taxes.  Targeting the rich - whether it be individuals or companies - is generally ineffective because they have the means to circumvent your targeted taxes.  They move to another country or hire accountants/attorneys to find tax loopholes etc.  Raising taxes on this segment of the population results in lowered tax revenue - it goes up a little in year 1 and then rapidly declines as businesses and individuals react.  The problem we find ourselves in here in the US is that 40% of the country already doesn't pay income tax.  This is now going to get even higher.  As the number of people who pay taxes become smaller, their disincentive to remain in this country or to remain in the tax-paying class increases.  The marginal tax rate skyrockets which means that you have created huge barriers to people moving out of poverty and out of the middle class.

Secondly, you are correct that Obama is a great orator.  In my book that is not a great thing in a politician.  If a politician is a poor to moderate speaker then they must rely on the power of the idea/policy itself to persuade people.  This puts primacy on the idea or policy rather than the salesman.  I can look throughout history and see that some of the worst dictators came to power on the strength of their oratory skills.  Rarely is this the case with plain-spoken politicians.

I hope the US does all it can to promote small businesses, that's where it should be at. Hope we get the same here in the UK.

Anyway I'll just copy and paste an email from my friend in NYC....

"HURRAH!
He didn't JUST win!
It's a complete f**king landslide!!!
People are dancing in the street here in NYC!"

Big step forward today, let's hope it continues that way....

Yet it seems that every time we have a Democrat in the White house we have economic prosperity.  Without getting into the last 100 years... FDR brought us out of the depression, not by giving tax breaks to the wealthy, but rather by giving jobs to the working class. Trickle down economics is a sham.  Also look at Europe... their economy is booming relative to ours and they have higher taxes (with a few exceptions).

In any case I think John McCain's speech yesterday showed what a good man he is.  As I have said before he made a big bliunder when selecting his running mate. Had he chosen someone more qualified you would have seen a tighter race.

PS Joe, I love your product and am currently evaluating it for our site. Keep up the good work.

Joe - agreed that the rich in general find ways to evade tax. In my native Holland people will claim more and more people will emigrate due to tax pressure. But ultimately this is quite a slim minority. The main reason being that moving out is very very intrusive in your life. Secondly many realize abroad what they miss from back home. Something similar happens here. I live close to the French-Swiss border. Prices across the border (rent, food, etc) are a fraction of what it is here. Over recent years the borders have opened to people working on one side and living in the other. Still the Swiss remain here. Largely because they are rooted here and prefer the services and way of life. So I'm not convinced by the 'they'll flee when taxed' argument. I do find it odd that 40% (assuming you mean the bottom 40%) do not pay any taxes. Here they do. Although you could argue they get it back in medical insurance subsidies.

The other point you made about great orators. We have had 8 years of possibly the other extreme. In my book he was not full of ideas or great policies. Instead he seemed to live stuff by the day. He was a great salesman, granted (but incidentally, he 'sold' well in the US but not here). But this, IMO, does not make someone a better leader. For me a large part of leadership means inspiring people to make sacrifices they might otherwise not make. To bring people together in a common effort. That requires great oratory skills as well as organizational. So for me it is positive. It is true that some of the greatest villains were great orators, but for me this cannot be logically reversed. Josey mentions FDR. FDR was a great orator. I think it's what not only the US, but the whole planet needs right now. Remember that most people pay quite close attention to what the US president says and does.

In my lifetime I have not witnessed a greater interest in a foreign election than this one. In most countries in Western Europe, TV broadcasts were continued throughout the night (i.e. from 1 AM until 6 AM as results came in). This alone is something to note. I remember that 8 years ago I felt it a kind of injustice that the 'mightiest man on Earth' was chosen by a couple of hundred million. If you stop to think about it, there is something bizarre about a night where millions upon millions around the world tune in to follow what is happening in your country. The elections here are not much followed by the natives, let alone people from abroad. That would be the day when you'd stay up until the wee hours in the morning as you're following the results of the Swiss elections.

Quite a change to have a non-technical debate here :-) Cheers

I have heard it said that economics tend to run 6-8 years after legislation, which would explain the prosperity that Democrats enjoy as they are usually preceeded by Republican economic policies.   I hope and pray that it holds true now and that while we are in a dip right now, that things will bounce back strong.

It is giong to be a challenging and interesting four years and I look forward to them.  I am sure things will happen that I don't agree with, but I think a lot of good things can happen to.

The fact that all ethinic groups, religions, etc came out and voted like they did is a great sign for the U.S..   I heard Oprah say last night that she hasn't felt this sort of unity (being the interest in our election and country) since 9/11.  Frankly, I would much rather our country unify behind a new leader (not blindly following, but supporting, helping) then in the aftermath of terrorism.

In selfishness, the next time I go to Europe and sit down to talk to someone, they won't ask me about George Bush, which is a plus :)
