I am seeking guidance on possible approaches to a project which I will soon be asked to undertake.  The needs are fairly basic....

1> Allow a user to upload a file (CSV or XML or the like) to the website and automatically import the data into a UDT.

2> Provide a link on a page that displays the uploaded data in tabular format (based on a key field).

The format of the uploaded file will be defined as part of the project and will not change (although some error detection would be required before committing the file to the database.

The upload and population of the UDT would need to happen seamlessly and not require admin intervention.

I am looking for techniques using a minimum of custom coding because of the continued maintenance requirement of such code.  We have several 3rd party tools such as XMOD, etc. that may provide some functionality.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Are you trying to collect data from multiple users or is there only a single set of data frequently updated? In the second case, you might consider to use a module, which allows to present content of a single file in a given format (for which there are existing modules), otherwise you will need to import all data into a common table.

It would be the first case...multiple uploads.

In this case, it is a competitive event (one of many listed in a database) and a program that outputs a file of results to be uploaded to the site for display.

Roy,

if there is only one signle file with all the results, it might be easiest to simply display the file content instead of importing data to display them.

Interesting thought...

I am thinking of having the external program used to process the scoring and calculate the results simply produce an XML file of the data in a fixed format.  This file would then be uploaded to the website and connected to a particular event's entry in the existing UDT.

The trick is displaying the data I guess...

Maybe XMOD might provide a workable solution here...hmmm

Thanks for your thoughts!
