I'm researching material for a couple of blog posts about what if any weaknesses the DotNetNuke platform has and what can we do about it, if you raise a good point I'll me more than happy to mention you on my blog when I write about it.

Well, I think the obvious one is the unfriendly URLs in the core. I have to buy a 3rd party module (URL Rewriter - essential) to do this but if the tabIDs were removed in the core URL rewriting it would improve the SEO on thousands of DNN sites around the world. Of course, there are always solutions to the problems but I am referring to a bog-standand DNN install.

I don't like the way Keywords, titles and descriptions inherit from the Site settings. It leads to laziness and a lot of DNN noobs don't know that it's best practise for them to be unique and handcrafted - I would like to see a flag/wanring on the Page Settings suggesting that they be changed if they are blank or inherited...

For several months I used a number of 3rd party modules and none of them worked. In the end we had to resort to manually making changes ourselves through the Remote Desktop Connection.

Surely the standard inclusion of linkclick.aspx would have to me my pet hate.

I understand it's good in some situations, but could we at least have an option to turn it off without hacking apart the source?

Hi,

Interested topic to go along with. Since I believe DNN has to go a far long way to go for SEO.

SEO of DNN is VERY bad in regard to php, java or simple html sites. I do not have a clue why. also the language of a site is not properly detected although the lang word is injected in the page. http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/118/threadid/275313/scope/posts/Default.aspx

Not defining a proper html version might be a reason? I do not know, but competitors get very much higher than a DNN store. Compare a DNN website against a PHP, Java or html site and you will see. Most times those sites have a bad keyword practice as well, but url is very humanfriendly without keypair value used in dnn querystrings. Also try a aspdotnetstorefront shop and you will see that a classic asp, java or php site beets the hell out of asp.net or DNN sites..do not ask me why..if anybody could help in this matter..I reward with 5.000 USD to get a better pagerank with DNN. It is pretty bad.

The url rewriter of ifinity is nice, but does not match page localizaton, nor can you buy the source of ifinity so you can step in to co-develop or help improve the DNN platform. I think if you look at PHP open source shops, they are far in front than any asp or dnn store.

I would like to keep this thread running with input how to improve.

J.
