I'm a new DotNetNuke user, and am excited by the possibilities of DNN, however I have one doubt. My site is very slow to load initially and can be subsequently slow in navigating pages. I have asked my hosting company and they say that this is a drawback of DotNetNuke, is this true? Is there any way to overcome the problem?

Well, it is true that DotNetNuke does use more resources than most "special purpose" ASP.NET apps, but that's really no excuse for it running slow.  I don't know what hosting provider you use, but typically there is a tradeoff between performance and price.  If you're wanting cheap service, then there are companies such as WebHost4Life that are very good at that, if you're wanting fast, reliable service, then companies like PowerDNN and MaximumASP  are very good at that.

If you're not wanting to change hosts though, you may consider using www.KeepAliveForever.com .  If your DNN web site is on a slow PC, it won't help, but it will give you an idea of how slow (or fast) you really are running.  If the PC isn't the problem, then KeepAliveForever will help eliminate DNN startup times and lags.

Mr MobileNow,

Thanks for helping, I have signed up to KeepAliveForEver and it certainly seems to have speeded thing up, I will now have to assess costs of using this in the long term as opposed to other options. My site is currently hosted with Web Fusion in the UK and my intention is to host this and future sites in the UK although the choices at the moment seem to be limited.

Another possibility with this could be my problem.  Each day my website will do a recompile.   And one of the modules that is doing a recompile forces a search through the whole path.  This can delay it for 2-8 seconds.  Of course this is nerve racking for potential customers.  Check out my new site at waitingforittocompilestupid@#%$!.com

Does anyone know a list of changes that could trigger a recompile?  What debugging methods are available for to find what process is causing the slowdown?  I've used filemon from sysinternals to diagnose the path delay.  But from there it's still a mystery.  Thanks

sorry but blaming the hosting service or server setup is a complete copout and deception. all dnn sites are slooow....the tradeoff between price and performance is a complete non-sequitur. when coming to this site today i thought i was going to collect social security before the site loaded.
