I have downloaded and installed the core maps module and it is very impressive - many thanks to Kevin and the team for such a great module (I used to use the old Bic4e map mod).

However, I may have to abandon it and choose a commercial solution despite it being not as mature as the core module for the simple reason that the core module appear to be unsupported. There are posts that are 6 months old with no answers (fairly simple questions too). I bet you my new "major bug post" will remain unanswered too.

So, there is clearly an issue here. There's no point having great core modules if they are going to be unsupported. Slowly but surely I have migrated all my core modules over to commercial solutions on my social network, PokerDIY. Usually the prime reason is because the modules are unsupported - what a pity.

No single person is to blame here, and everyone who has worked on a project gets my gratitude. This model of development is working on some projects, but definitely not others. So how do we fix this? Perhaps a reshuffling of the present project teams on these modules need to be considered? Or perhaps the project lead (the motivator) needs to have a bit of cash thrown at them to get the whip cracking. At the very least the modules should be supported, even if development has ceased (which seems to be another issue).

Flame Disclaimer - yes, I know it's open-source, free and the project team are volunteers (and believe me I appreciate the work, effort and time spent already). And I am happy to pay for a supported solution. No, I cannot volunteer myself to work on the project due to the same time constraints as everyone else. This is NOT an attack, I merely want to see these projects serve their full purpose and potential...

Rodney,

I agree, that support is part of the project work, but especially for single-man teams on more complex modules like Maps or Forums it is hard to achive this. We always encourage the team leads to add people to the teams, not only programmers, but also testers, documentation authors and supporters - but, in fact, it is not always easy to manage a team besides daily work and not reducing development speed. It would be great if community people do step up, contribute to the forums and the projects, because this is beyond the options of the core team and DotNetNuke Corp.

Cheers from Germany,

Thanks Sebastian, and I am fully aware of this. I am just hoping to bring this issue to DNN Corps attention (the fact that certain modules are rendered useless due to no support). Something needs to change.

It's a shame, maybe bringing in more volunteers might help, I'm sure there are a lot of people out there that would love to get more involved in DNN Development. Also with the recent announcement of funding they might be able to get more paid people on board...

Unlikely paid people would help in the progress of open source modules, I would hope though that there would be a service internal infrustructure improvement, but that is unlikely to happen overnight.

Besides, if person X gets paid, then person Y would want to be paid as well if they are doing similar roles Just because the corp got sponsored, I would suggest that they are still not "bundled in cash", but I suspect they have enough to get by and move forward the core platform along to the "next phase" (with that and their new paid platform/support plan). Before anybody asks me if I know if how many $$$ they got, I state for the record that I have absolutely no clue (nor do I particularly wish to know, it's none of my business). I'm wishing them the best of luck as it will help all of us.

Thanks.
