I'm a newbie (just installed DNN yesterday), but it seems to me all you have to do to install a new skin  (and/or container) in DNN 5 is to copy the files into the appropriate folders.

Skins go to:  Root\Portals\_default\Skins\New Skin Name\

Containers go to:  Root\Portals\_default\Containers\New Container Name\

Whoever gave you the skin/container should have given you varios files with .ascx, .css and probably some image files.  Just copy these to the appropriate folders above.

After I copied the files, I went into DNN first as host and selected the New Skin and Container under Host Settings.  Then I logged in as admin and under Site Settings changed the Skin and Container for my specific portal.

Maybe my answer is simplified, but it worked for me.  Hope this helps someone else.

 Thanks Lisa,
The steps you mentioned were simple and worked like a champ.  I was able to get a skin working on my test DNN install. The boss has been wanting me to change out a skin for one with a more politically neutral color. I feel confident I can comply with that request now.
Sincerely,
Matthew

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but do I really need to watch a video to figure out how to install a skin?  I have googled for over 1/2 hour, and all I've found is talk about creating videos, or download this video or that video, or pay me $$$ to see my video...  How freakin' complicated did DNN make it to install a skin?
I'm using 5.6.2, I've gone to Host->Extensions->Install Extension Wizard.  What kind of wizard is this?  It says to browse to to the Extension Package.  I have a skin zip downloaded from DNNSkinGarden.codeplex.com, which provides no instructions on how to install it.  And the wizard tells me when I pick a file called "Garden.Package.dnn" (sure sounds like the right file) that ".dnn" is not a valid extension.  But the wizard does NOT tell me what a valid extension would look like.  Nor have I come across yet any documentation on how to use this wizard, but I have not looked that hard yet.

I will now go watch a video to show me how to use a wizard that should take one single file as input and take care of the rest of the process for me...  I will report back...

Well, for those who have not tried the obvious...  These "packages" are not zipped up for convenience  I had unzipped the file at the server, and that was my problem.  Just keep the zip file you downloaded all zipped up, and pass this zip file to the extension wizard, (with .zip extension) and all gets installed like magic.  Is this so intuitively obvious that nobody thought to mention it?

So assuming you are downloading a DNN skin package (v4 or v5) you download the zip file, go to the Host or Admin Extensions page as a super user (Admin page will make the skin available only to the one portal, Host Extensions page will make it available for use by ALL portals in that installation).

Either click on Extensions for the menu and select to start the installation wizard, or go to the bottom of the page (scroll past all your current extensions to the very bottom) and there should be a link to the Installation wizard there.

Once you start the wizard, simply browse to where your downloaded skin zip package file is located (local your your machine, it will upload to the server for you).  Then if it is valid and all goes well, you just have to keep clicking Next as it displays information about the package, and it will ask you to accept the license agreement, as well, and when finished, your skin is then available.

No video is required to do this, it really is simple once you know how...

I would still like to see the error message when you select a file with an extension other than .zip, rather than just saying "extension .xxx is invalid", why don't you say something more helpful, like "valid packages use the .zip extension" perhaps?

Time to go try out some more skins...
