Searching through DNN blogs and forums, I found that the core team is working hard on making DNN compatible with Firebird, leaving MySQL support behind. I don't know what the situation is elsewhere, but in our country (Czech Republic), there are only about 7 webhosters offering Firebird, and only 1 offering Firebird + ASP.NET. I assume that MySQL is much more frequent everywhere, so I somehow don't understand why Firebird was prioritized over MySQL...

Microworks - I think you will find that we can only work with the community who supports us.

To date, I can't recall anyone who has come in to support DotNetNuke and MySQL for dnn3 + but we have someone supporting Firebird, so we happily invite them to work with us.

If there was someone who was in the MySQL space, then they too could be part of a project, but there is no on standing out and telling us all they are experienced in this.

Do you know of someone?

I agree with your thoughts, but as I said, we can only support those who support us and I am sure that at some time in the future, there will be a change to this.

Maybe other community members can add more to this.

Nina - I think you will find that sometimes, some decisions should be made without waiting for anyone to step out.
If there were no "core plans" to support anything else than MS SQL Server, and the Firebird support came as an unplanned  "side initiative", OK, I can understand your attitude.

BTW, this is not to criticise the work of the core team - I am excited about DNN and the community around it. I just wanted to know what led the core team to the decision Firebird > MySQL.

Microworks,

I don't think it was as much of an issue that a "decision was made", rather, there is no one in the community as yet willing to step up and lead the creation of the provider.  Since DotNetNuke is ultimately community supported software, this is the #1 driver in terms of adding core support for other databases.

Note that there is also nothing stopping someone creating a MySQL provider for profit either-- and that hasn't happened recently. There was a company working on a provider in the 2.x days, but they seemed to have all but disappeared.

Yes, I believe that I understand it more now.
Nevertheless, I think that, in the DNN's history, there had to be times when the core team decided "we plainly MUST include this or that in DNN, because it is very important". IMHO, MySQL support could be a "killer feature", which would spread DNN like an epidemy :). Of course, I don't know how big a task it is, and no way I am trying to force the core team (or anyone else) to do something they don't wish to do for any reason. I like DNN very much as it is, even if I will have to find a provider offering .NET + MS SQL Server and pay something more for it.
