I have used both CrystalTech and 3Essentials but none of the other ones.  My observations though are that you definitely get way more bang for your buck at 3Essentials than you do at CrystalTech which is a huge plus.

On that same note, I began having issues with the email servers at CrystalTech (emails would just mysteriously never come through but other emails from the same user would).

Any time I've had any sort of an issue with 3Essentials their support has been unrivaled in their ability to quickly acknowledge and address the issues (which, btw, issues are very infrequent; I don't want it to sound like I get lots of issues that they need to resolve).

Due to my good experiences at 3Essentials for the past 1 1/2 years I personally host my site and then have moved several clients (five) over to their hosting in the last year.  Several of those clients were moved from hosting at CrystalTech.

That's my take on it.

I think it depends on what your needs are. Mainly three main issues:

  1. What is it going to be used for?  A business mission critical site or more of a retail site, club site, personal site, etc.?
  2. What are your back end / server skills?  Do you want to and have the ability to do installation maintenance yourself? Or would you rather have someone else who really knows their stuff handle that part so you don't have to?
  3. Cost

If it is a business mission critical site and/or you would rather have someone who knows their stuff handle the installation/server maintenance then PowerDNN is the way to go.

If it is a retail site, personal site, etc. and/or you want to do all your own DNN installation/updates and installation maintenance then I would say 3essentials would cost less.

Another issue would be site speed. Many DNN community members have the knowledge and skills to tweak, optimize, and maintain super fast DNN installs. People like me, who don't really want to mess with it, use PowerDNN as their site optimization and maintenance tools combined with high end servers and equipment produce very fast sites.

Hope this helps.

Greg
