So I logged on today to check out the forums for a tech solution and come to find out DNN is now 'selling' a more robust version of the software? I'm puzzled however, why would this be. I understand that there are some perks to "owning" the professional version but I can't help but wonder if the community edition is always now going to be on the back-burner as opposed to the Professional version which seems like it will take the stage front being "certified".... Just looking for some input.

Thanks

Current free DotNetNuke will continue to exist as Community Edition, while Professional edition will have the same code and get added value like support, upgrade notification etc. PE is focusing on stability and might be a version behind CE, which shall stay on the cutting edge of development.

There is no difference to what DNN is offering that is any different to MySQL or many other open source projects.
MySQL Download Options

Per several threads by the Core team:
1. Modules compiled on the Community version will install on the Professional Edition.
2. Source code will still be available.
3. Professional Edition will be the most stable version (ie: 4.9.2 or 5.0.1) going forward.

My Opinion
DNN Corp is not trying to steal your customers if you are a developer, consultant or value added reseller.  If what makes you valuable to your customer is on-site support, remote administration and custom module development then you should have nothing to worry about.  They are paying you to support their installation of DNN therefore thay do not need the PE.  They have you.  You just saved them the cost of the PE version.

With that said, your customers should be running the most stable version of the CE which should actually match the PE version (duh!).  All newer CE versions will still have known issues and will be looking for Community input for new features, bug fixes and issues.  These versions will be for you to download, test and report problems.  You should then discuss new features with your customer and when a stable version is released you can upgrade them.  That is what they are paying for.

Developers should compile against the most stable version they wish to support.  You should test build against new versions, work out any issues and be ready to deliver your new version when the newest STABLE version is released.

The PE version is for those that need support like you pay for with other hardware or software products.  The full scope of what is being offered is not fully clear to me yet but that should be coming.  I will be sticking with the CE versions because I provide full support to my customers.  That's why I get paid by them!

Well said Mike...  I am not sure how some people are coming to certain conclusions, but I can say with 100% certainty that:

1. DNN Corp does NOT want to interfere with the relationships between Customers and Service Providers ( Systems Integrators, Hosters, Consultants, VARs, etc.. )

For those customers who need to mitigate the business risk of adopting the DNN product as a central part of their business strategy, they can optionally choose to use Professional Edition - as it provides the assurance and formal business commitment that the product is solidly backed by a traditional product vendor who is committed to meeting the needs of its users now and in the future.

From a Service Provider perspective, this should not be viewed as competitive in any way - but rather as a means to enhance your offering to customers. Service Providers will continue to work directly with their customers and cultivate meaningful long term relationships; however, when an issue comes up with the core product in your customer installation, you will now have the ability to get immediate assistance and resolution - ultimately allowing you to provide a higher level of service to your customers. Professional Edition also provides you with additional marketing benefits which should improve your chances of success in larger scale customer engagements ( where peace of mind is critically important ).

A Partner program will be announced soon which also provides a new opportunity and financial benefit to those Service Providers who wish to offer Professional Edition to their customers.

2. DNN Corp is NOT going to neglect Community Edition.

Professional Edition is built on top of Community Edition - so Community Edition provides the solid foundation for all product editions. Therefore, just like in traditional construction, you can not neglect the foundation and expect to build a superior structure which stands the test of time. We are committed to driving value and innovation in the Community Edition just like we have always done. In addition, we will likely develop some extra functionality which is exclusive to Professional Edition; functionality that would not be applicable to the vast majority of deployments and therefore would not make sense for the standard use case to suffer from the extra overhead.

My comments are my own and are offered WITHOUT PREJUDICE
