Something missing from the replies here is an answer to the question.  It would be beneficial if someone who has used them both could post a fair assesment on the strengths and weaknesses of both module suites.  This would not only help the poster, but also other readers.  And let's not forget the module providers.  They would certainly get something out of seeing a 3rd party review comparing the two side-by-side.  :)

I am only commenting because I am indeed interested in seeing a comparison on the two.  I am going to probably need to purchase AS very soon.  I have already downloaded ST, but haven't had a chance to give them a test run yet.  Enough reviews or even a single one that is really thorough could help a ton of people.

This may have something to do with the apparent love affair evidenced between certain DNN Team Members and Will.  I've tried to post useful community opinions about Will's company and products in the past but that post was deleted along with the evidence on the strengths and weaknesses of his modules.  Personally I avoid Will's products.  Definitely visit his support forum for awhile and get a picture for yourself.

Yes, I encourage you to visit all our forums.  We recently made some changes and this post will show you some of the feedback we have received.

The thing with social networks is that there's no clear definition of what such a module should give you. Is it something like Facebook or MySpace or little of both or what? You could get two such modules and they do totally different things and they  both claim they do social networks.

The reason I posted the question is I wanted to know how they overlap and divide in terms of functionality. Honestly I do not even know what I am supposed to be getting with such a module. Why would one be better than the other.

All my experience with social networks is some experience with Facebook. So all I know is that a module will allow you to share links, photos, writing on walls, comments, nofitications. But because Facebook allows apps from third party developers, I am going to expect that it can a lot more. I think if a module allows plugins, that would be great. Then developers can expand on it.

I am at the very beginning of evaluating these modules as well.

Based totally on the demos available Venexus's demo has impressed me the most so far and they get points for having Facebook-like template's already built and included which could be a time saver. Venexus needs to work on listing the features and explaining the capabilities of their module more - especially on their snowcovered page.  Active Social needs to work on their demo as it is the least impressive of the three in my opinion.

Here's one other thing I'm looking into - I'm building a community portal for a small town and I'd really like to open the social networking up to the school kids. But adding the school kids would drastically increase the server resources needed - with all those kids uploading tons of pictures, video's etc.  One solution I have thought of to this is to use Mosso's Cloud Files service to store the larger files (images, video's, etc.). I have emailed Jeff Smith @ Venexus about the possibility of adding Mosso's api's to the module to make this happen. Apparently there are other customers who want to do the same thing with Amazon S3.  If anyone has any other ideas please share.

Smart Thinker is open source and free. Did you consider adding such features yourself (like contracting someone to do it)?

Just realize that Will spends a great deal of time making sure only approved feedback/forum posts are posted (which is also done here, as well).  If I were to post evidence of how poor Will's company is my posts would be deleted from here within minutes.  There is a relationship between Will and DNN that does NOT benefit the customer.

I'm too poor for anything other than the community version
