As part of a web hosting service, I want to offer a more sophisticated shopping cart than the DNN stock store module.

My stop-go requirements are it needs to have a multiportal or dnn installation or server license and to support ssl shared certs (for the cc capture screen and not needed for Paypal only store).

After doing some research it seems my only choice is Catalook. However I am getting mixed opinions about it according to some user posts in the forums. I personally checked it out. It had a lot of modules and so many options to the point that I am thinking it might overwhelm the average user. The documentation is one huge document with little organization. So my idea is to create my own simple hands-on doc for putting up a simple store quickly and have the user ignore all the other options. The store options are available if the user needs them. I consider the vast number of options as a Catalook  advantage.

OR

I am thinking of using a Paypal only store. I am stipulating that a simple store owner will not have their own merchant account and a credit card gateway account with a company like Authorize.net. A business Paypal account will do for them. If I go that route, any good experiences with such a cart?

I am interested in other opinions.

I've been in the same boat for over three years and am still using PHP carts in place of DNN stores. Catalook has the best featureset and best license, but every time I test it, I back off again and build a php cart instead. Catalook needs to wipe the slate and start over fresh with all the knowledge and skill they've garnered.

I'm also limiting DNN stores to small shops with just a paypal/email ording and payment system, but after the nicest DNN store module ever made (eTailer) turned out to be too risky to go with (for a variety of reasons), I'm now putting my eggs in the NB Store basket. http://www.codeplex.com/NBStore This is the best small cart option at this point.. I'm just hoping more developers get involved.

The other carts either have punitive licensing, are too pricey, or lack one or other vital features... or suffer from having less than one update per year.

Go and try NB Store and give David some feedback on Codeplex... He's talented and keen.

BTW, the cart strangely enough shows $
